Venice AI Review When Privacy Depends on the Model You Pick

Bottom Line: Venice AI is worth $18 a month if you stay on its Private models, which run without keeping your prompts, and you want fewer refusals than mainstream chatbots give. It is a poor buy for private Claude or GPT use, because those run in an Anonymous tier where Venice says the provider likely saves your prompt. Roleplayers who want a stable companion are better served elsewhere.

This Venice AI review starts with a promise. In May 2024, founder Erik Voorhees told Decrypt that Venice would “never provide Claude LLM and never provide OpenAI’s service,” and would stay a way to reach open-source models “explicitly and only.”

Venice’s own model list now says something else. As of 1 October 2026, its API returns 127 text models, and 57 of them sit in the Anonymous tier, including all 15 Claude models, all 7 Gemini models and the closed GPT models.

Privacy is Venice’s main selling point, so that tier label matters more than any feature list. I still think the Private tier beats what most chatbot apps offer.

This review separates what Venice protects from what it only hides, then covers the uncensored claim, the credits trap when you cancel, and whether roleplayers should bother.

Venice AI Review When Privacy Depends on the Model You Pick

What Do Venice AI Reviews Leave Out About Privacy?

Most Venice AI reviews leave out that privacy is set per model: Private models keep no prompts, while Anonymous models only hide your identity from a provider that still reads the prompt.

The label on the model you pick decides which one you get.

Venice AI privacy tiers from Anonymous to E2EE

Venice’s text model list marks every model Private or Anonymized. Its privacy page is blunt about the second group, saying the “Provider sees and likely saves your prompt.”

If you came for roleplay rather than private research, Nectar AI is a hosted roleplay app built around characters, with its own plans and credit packs.

ModeWhat Venice promisesWho can read the promptPlan
AnonymousYour identity is hidden from the providerThe third-party providerFree and paid
PrivateNo prompt or response stored, by contractVenice’s own or partner hardware, brieflyFree and paid
TEE (trusted execution environment)Runs inside a hardware-isolated enclaveNo GPU operatorPro and up
E2EE (end-to-end encryption)Encrypted on your device until the enclaveNobody outside the enclavePro and up

The Private tier rests on trust. Venice says privacy there “is enforced by contractual commitments,” and lists the downside itself: it “relies on Venice and partners honoring contracts.”

The two stronger modes are narrow. Only 12 text models support TEE and 12 support E2EE, the enclaves are run by partners NEAR AI Cloud and Phala Network, and E2EE switches off web search and memory.

Example scenario: Pick Claude Opus 5.5 in Venice and Anthropic still receives your prompt, with your Venice identity stripped off. Pick GLM 5.3 instead and the same prompt runs on infrastructure Venice says keeps nothing.

The tier label is the first thing I check before typing anything personal into Venice.

Venice still beats the industry default on one point. A Stanford privacy study of frontier developers’ policies found six leading U.S. companies feed user inputs back into their models, and Venice stores your chat history in your browser instead of on its servers.

Is Venice AI as Good as ChatGPT?

Venice AI trades ChatGPT’s cloud history and polish for browser-only chat storage and a menu of 127 text models, including GPT models reached through its Anonymous tier.

It is the better pick when privacy outranks convenience.

The Stanford study’s lead author, Jennifer King, warns that sensitive details shared with ChatGPT or Gemini “may be collected and used for training.” Venice’s Private models avoid that by contract, while its GPT models still pass your prompt to OpenAI, so the biggest privacy gain comes from picking a Private model.

Is Venice AI Uncensored?

Venice AI is uncensored only on a handful of models: 6 of its 127 text models carry “uncensored” in their name or description, and the rest largely keep the limits their makers built in.

The label sells the platform, but it describes a small shelf.

Venice Uncensored 1.2 is the one model Venice tags as its most uncensored, alongside a roleplay version, two Gemma 4 builds and a GLM 4.7 Flash variant. One of the six, Qwen 3.6 Plus Uncensored, runs in the Anonymous tier, so the provider still sees what you send it.

Subscribers have noticed the gap. One r/VeniceAI post asked why a site with “Uncensored AI” in its title had “only 8 out of 107” uncensored models, and a GLM 5.2 thread describes a model refusing fiction it used to write.

The shelf also shrinks. Venice’s changelog for August 2026 lists 17 deprecated models, including Venice Uncensored 24B and a Qwen3.6 35B Uncensored build.

To me, “uncensored” describes six models here, and the unfiltered chatbots built around that idea are a different product category.

How Much Does Venice AI Cost?

Venice AI costs $0, $18, $68 or $200 a month, and every paid plan adds credits, worth 100 to the dollar, for video, frontier models and API use.

Paying yearly cuts up to 16.7% off.

Venice AI plans and monthly credits compared
PlanPriceChat and imagesMonthly credits
Free$010 text and 15 image prompts a day, base modelsNone
Pro$18 a monthUnlimited text, 1,000 images a day100, no banking
Pro Plus$68 a monthPro features, higher image limits7,500, banked for 2 months
Max$200 a monthPro features, highest image limits22,500, banked for 3 months

The word “unlimited” on Pro covers text chat, and Venice’s pricing page says frontier image and text models run on credits. That split is where Pro subscribers feel squeezed: in one September r/VeniceAI thread, a Pro user found GLM 5.2 suddenly charging credits, staff called it a bug, and the TEE models stayed paid.

The cancellation rule is the trap I would warn anyone about first. Venice’s Pro Plus and Max announcement promised a credit budget that “doesn’t vanish if you don’t use it all,” yet a Pro Plus subscriber who cancelled lost 9.4k banked credits the same day.

A reply in that thread says the credits are tied to having an active subscription, and suggests emailing support@venice.ai if it happens to you. I treat banked credits as rented, so spend them before you press cancel.

Is Venice AI Good for Roleplay?

Venice AI is a decent roleplay tool on its Private and uncensored models, but frequent model changes make it a shaky home for a long-running character.

It suits people who like to tinker more than people who want a companion.

Pro includes custom characters, and the roleplay highs are real. One r/VeniceAI roleplayer describes forking a chat to stage their own character’s funeral and crying at the result, and a reply guesses Aion 2.0 was the model behind a similar moment.

Aion 2.0 is also on the August list of 17 deprecated models, so the model a long story was built on can be retired between sessions.

Venice is the app I point people to for private one-off writing, while model churn makes it a poor host for a months-long companion.

Power users who want full control can connect Venice’s OpenAI-compatible API to SillyTavern, and people leaving Janitor can compare it against other Janitor AI alternatives.

What Are Venice AI’s Pros and Cons?

Venice AI’s biggest strength is its Private tier and its biggest weakness is that the tier depends on which model you pick.

Here is how the rest stacks up.

Pros:

  1. Private models keep no prompts by contract, and your chat history stays in your browser.
  2. TEE and E2EE modes give Pro users hardware-backed privacy on 12 models each.
  3. One subscription reaches 127 text models plus image and video tools.
  4. Its uncensored models refuse less than mainstream chatbots.
  5. The free tier lets you test the app with 10 text prompts a day.

Cons:

  1. 57 of 127 text models, including every Claude and Gemini model, run in the Anonymous tier.
  2. Models move in and out of Pro with little warning, and 17 were deprecated in August 2026.
  3. Banked credits can disappear the day you cancel your plan.
  4. Only 6 text models are built to be uncensored.
  5. Chats do not follow you to another device unless you use Pro’s encrypted backups.

The first con is the one I weigh heaviest, because it sits under the feature Venice sells hardest.

Is Venice AI Legit and Worth Paying For?

Venice AI is a legitimate company and worth $18 a month for private, lightly filtered writing on its Private models, but it is not worth it for private Claude or GPT use or for a stable companion.

Pick by what you need below.

Venice was founded by Erik Voorhees, who also founded the crypto exchange ShapeShift, and launched in May 2024. Its Google Play listing shows a 4.0 star rating from 4.05K reviews and 500K+ downloads, with the app rated Everyone.

What you wantVerdict
Private research or writingPay for Pro and stay on Private models
Private Claude or GPT answersSkip it, those models are Anonymous
Heavy video or API usePro Plus or Max, and spend credits before cancelling
A companion that stays the sameUse a dedicated companion app

I’d only pay for Pro after checking that the models I plan to use carry the Private label. If what you want is one character who stays consistent week to week, Candy AI is built around one-to-one chat with a character you create.

Its free tier stops at 5 messages, so treat it as a paid app.

For character roleplay, Nectar AI is the better fit: a hosted roleplay app built around character chat, with no model menu to manage. If privacy is the deciding factor there too, how Candy handles privacy is worth reading before you sign up anywhere.

Quick Takeaways

  • Venice’s privacy depends on the model: 57 of its 127 text models run in an Anonymous tier where the provider still reads your prompt.
  • Every Claude and Gemini model on Venice is Anonymous, despite the founder’s 2024 promise never to offer Claude or OpenAI.
  • Only 6 text models are built to be uncensored, and Venice retired two other uncensored models in August 2026.
  • Pro costs $18 a month for unlimited text chat, but frontier models run on credits, and Pro Plus or Max credits banked for later can vanish when you cancel.
  • Pay for Venice for private writing on Private models, and pick a dedicated companion app for long roleplay.
