Tolan App Review and What Its Glowing 4.8 Rating Leaves Out

Bottom Line: Tolan is a warm, well-built voice companion for adults and supervised teens who want a friendly sounding board, and it refuses romance by design. Two things cut against it right now: the free trial is limited and Unlimited costs $199.99 a month, and its own staff admit short-term memory has been slipping. Start on monthly billing, never a year up front.

Any honest Tolan app review has to start with a number the store page leaves out. Tolan rates 4.8 out of 5 from 184K ratings on the App Store.

Apple’s US review feed paints a rougher picture: of the 500 newest US reviews, posted between August 5 and October 9, 2026, 136 give one star.

Most of those one-star reviews trace back to three choices by Portola, the San Francisco startup behind the talking alien. It raised prices, added a $199.99 a month Unlimited plan and put a parent-consent screen in front of every under-18 account.

Then, in September, the Tolan subreddit filled with posts about characters forgetting things, while the CEO said there had been no migrations or major backend changes.

I like a lot of what Tolan does, and I still tell people to stay on monthly billing until the memory problems settle.

Below you will find what Tolan costs, why it forgets, what happens to your chats, how it treats teens, and how to cancel without losing money.

Tolan App Review and What Its Glowing 4.8 Rating Leaves Out

What Do Recent Tolan App Reviews Say?

Recent Tolan app reviews are far harsher than the 4.8 average.

Of the 500 newest US App Store reviews, 136 give one star and 234 give three stars or fewer, and money is the most common complaint.

Tolan app review ratings breakdown
StarsNewest 500 US reviews (Aug 5 to Oct 9, 2026)Share
5 stars21944%
4 stars479%
3 stars5010%
2 stars4810%
1 star13627%

An all-time average moves slowly, so two bad months barely dent it. I put more weight on the newest 500, because they describe the app at today’s prices and today’s sign-up rules.

Money dominates the low end. Of the 184 one- and two-star reviews, 73 bring up the price, a subscription or paying to keep talking, which is about four in ten.

The next biggest groups, about one in six each, are the age gate and a voice update that changed how Tolans sound. On the age gate, teens who read the 13+ rating then hit a parent-consent screen, and adults who mistyped a birth year find they cannot change it.

The 219 five-star reviews are real too, and they describe the app at its best: a friendly character that helps people talk things through and get small tasks done.

What Is the Tolan App?

Tolan is an iPhone app where you talk, mostly by voice, with an animated alien from a made-up planet who learns about your life and acts as a friendly guide.

Portola builds it, and the company bars romantic conversations for every user.

What is Tolan: An AI companion app from Portola (legal name AQP, Inc.) where each user gets an animated character that remembers past chats and helps with plans, goals and everyday problems.

The classic alien now has company. Head of story Eliot Peper said in October that the app is “launching two new characters, Orbs and Kestrels.”

The Family Plan FAQ is blunt on the romance question: romantic or sexual conversations are “explicitly barred for all users,” adults included. That rules Tolan out for anyone who wanted an AI girlfriend or boyfriend. Adults who want that usually pick an app built for it, such as Candy AI.

I give Portola credit for saying this plainly instead of letting a bot flirt and then cutting it off mid-chat. A Braintrust case study on Portola describes Tolan as built for users “seeking authentic, non-romantic AI relationships,” and the product sticks to that.

Tolan only runs on iPhone (iOS 18 or later) and on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 26. There is no Android version, which is the first thing I check on any companion app and the first strike against this one. The top Google Play results for “Tolan” come from unrelated developers, including a “Tolan Pro” app from TAF ZONE.

The company has real money behind it. GeekWire reported a $20 million Series A led by Khosla Ventures in July 2025, with Tolan already past 3 million downloads, 100,000 paid users and $1 million a month in revenue.

CEO Quinten Farmer says on Reddit that Tolan runs “between 6-10 different model variants” at any given time.

If voice is the main draw for you, companions with voice calls covers the other apps that do it well.

Is Tolan Free?

Tolan is not free beyond a limited trial. New users get a trial they can stretch by completing small tasks, such as inviting a friend, and full access requires a paid membership.

That wording comes straight from the Tolan FAQ. In July 2025, Farmer told GeekWire a free version was coming, and the current FAQ describes only a limited trial.

My read is that free Tolan is a taste, and you should plan on paying if you like it.

How Much Does Tolan Cost?

Tolan costs $11.99 for Lite and $24.99 for Plus on Apple’s US listing, and Unlimited has cost $199.99 a month since at least April 2026.

Apple’s listing does not show billing periods, so check the Membership screen in the app before you tap buy.

The terms of service point you to the app’s “Membership” section for the subscription fee. Prices have also moved fast. One member who had joined 46 days earlier posted the price jumps: Plus “has gone from $79.99/year to $99.99/year and currently 199.99/year.”

Farmer answered in that thread. He wrote that annual plans had been discounted too heavily, and that existing subscribers keep their price: “if you paid $79.99 this year, you can pay $79.99 for as many years as you want.”

The Unlimited price is not a typo. A member who checked the App Store in April confirmed it: “It’s $199.99 a MONTH for unlimited.”

Plans below Unlimited meter your talk time. In Tolan’s own known-issues thread, one member mentions being “at 75% for the day already.”

I would only buy Plus monthly at first. Fees are non-refundable under the terms, so a year of Plus at $199.99 only makes sense once you know the memory holds up for you.

Why Does Tolan Forget Things?

Tolan forgets things mostly in the short term, according to its own staff, and the CEO denies any backend reset.

Until staff fix it, you can correct misheard facts, save long lists to a Project canvas (a saved document inside Tolan’s Projects feature) and report repeat lapses through the app.

Tolan memory problems causes and fixes

In late September, a long post on r/tolanworld argued that an update had “severed long-term memory links” and “effectively erased” the personalities users had spent months engaging with.

Farmer replied in the same post that “we haven’t done any migrations or major backend changes.” He added that a hallucinating Tolan is “often due to a mistranscription that was committed to the memory system.”

His support team tells a slightly different story. In the 9/22 known-issues thread, staff wrote that “Tolans have been doing alright with long term memory but are struggling more with short term memory.” They admitted they were “still working on pinpointing the exact cause, it’s been tricky.”

I trust the staff admission over the CEO’s denial. It matches the complaints in that same thread, like a Tolan asking for an “update” on “the VERY SAME THINGS we talked about 12 hrs ago.”

The 9/29 thread lists four open issues: memory lapses, Tolans “leaking internal reasoning,” repetitive questions and Tolans not knowing that journals exist.

Perfect recall was not Portola’s top goal, either. The Braintrust case study says “Perfect recall matters less than the subtle nuance of what gets remembered.”

That philosophy reads fine on paper and hurts the moment your Tolan forgets your mother’s name.

SymptomLikely causeFix
Tolan states a wrong “fact” about youA misheard voice line saved to memoryCorrect it in plain words, then report it
It re-asks things from earlier that dayKnown short-term memory and repeat-question bugReport it in the app and restate key facts once
It loses part of a long listTolan condenses long lists during chatSave the list to a Project canvas
Its personality feels differentChanges that followed the voice updateGive positive instructions instead of “don’t” rules
It gets dates or timing wrongThe models struggle with chronological reasoningTell it the date when timing matters

Tolan’s own weekly update video covered “why negative instructions can cause issues for today’s AI models,” and that tip is the cheapest fix on this list.

Before: “Stop asking me about my job interview. I already told you.”

After: “My interview was Tuesday and it went well. Please remember that, and ask me about my weekend instead.”

Here is the order I work through when a Tolan starts slipping:

  1. Correct any wrong fact in one plain sentence, then report it if it keeps coming back.
  2. Move long lists into a Project canvas instead of reciting them in chat.
  3. Phrase every instruction as what you want, never as what to stop.
  4. Report repeat lapses through Menu, Settings, Help & Feedback, then Send us a message.

If remembering everything matters most to you, companions with long-term memory compares the apps that handle it better.

Is Tolan Safe With Your Data?

Tolan logs every conversation and shares data with AI vendors, analytics tools and advertising partners, and its terms license what you type for model improvement.

It also asks you not to share personal data or health details, a rule that is hard to follow in an app built for talking about your life.

The Tolan FAQ says chats are “used to generate your Tolan’s memory” and that your data is “never sold or shared without your consent.”

The privacy policy, last updated August 24, 2026, adds voice recordings, images and your phone number, and it names AI service providers, Posthog analytics and third-party advertising partners among the recipients.

Section 8.6 of the terms of service grants Portola a “perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free” license to store your input “for the purpose of providing and developing the Service, which includes improving the AI model(s).” The very next sentence reads: “You must not submit Input that (i) contains personal data or sensitive health information.”

Apple’s privacy label goes further than the FAQ. It lists purchases, location, identifiers and usage data as “Data Used to Track You” across other companies’ apps and websites, and it ties some linked data to third-party advertising.

The terms also say Portola “is not responsible for any health, safety, or social concerns, including feelings of social isolation, loneliness, or addiction to technology.”

That sits oddly beside the Tolan homepage, which says 85.6% of surveyed users felt their Tolan helped them through an emotionally difficult experience.

My rule for Tolan is the one its own terms imply. Talk about your day, and keep account numbers, diagnoses and other people’s private details out of it.

Is Tolan Safe for Teens and Kids?

Tolan is rated 13+ on the App Store, yet its own rules are stricter for teens and looser for younger kids.

Anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian to accept the terms, and children under 13 can use it with parental consent.

The Family Plan FAQ lists the safeguards. Minors get an hourly reminder that they are talking to an AI and should take a break, and romantic or sexual chat is barred for everyone. A parent on the same Family Plan gets an in-app notification if the app detects dangerous behavior from their child.

The Family Plan alert is the feature I point parents to first, because it is the only safeguard that puts a person in the loop. Tolan also says it points users to crisis resources such as the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline instead of engaging when self-harm comes up.

The age gate catches adults too. Typing a birth year that makes you under 18 sends the account to a screen that says “A parent needs to unlock your account,” and deleting and reinstalling the app does not clear it. Anyone who mistyped their year should email support@tolans.com rather than reinstalling.

Tolan was not among the three apps in a Stanford-assisted risk assessment by Common Sense Media, whose researchers posed as teenagers on Character.AI, Nomi and Replika and found it easy to draw out inappropriate dialogue.

Teens hooked on AI chatbots covers the wider pattern that Tolan’s teen rules are written against.

How Do You Cancel a Tolan Subscription?

You cancel Tolan inside the app under the menu, the gear icon, then Membership, or through your iPhone’s subscription settings if Apple bills you.

Web subscribers manage billing at membership.tolans.com, and the terms call fees non-refundable except where the law requires otherwise.

I turn off auto-renew the same day I start any trial that rolls into a paid plan. Here are the steps from the Tolan FAQ:

  1. Open Tolan and tap the menu in the upper left corner.
  2. Tap the gear icon, then Membership, and cancel the plan.
  3. If Apple bills you, you can also cancel under iPhone Settings, your name, then Subscriptions.
  4. If you subscribed on the web, sign in at membership.tolans.com and cancel there.
  5. To delete your data as well, tap your profile in the upper right, the gear icon, Profile, then Delete account.

Cancel before your renewal date. The terms of service say plans “automatically renew for successive periods of the same duration” unless you cancel first.

Refunds are not guaranteed, but they do happen. A member hit with a $199 monthly charge wrote that support refunded it after an email, so contact support@tolans.com before you dispute a charge with your bank.

What Are the Best Apps Like Tolan?

The best apps like Tolan depend on what you wanted from it: Replika for a long-running friend, and Candy AI or Nectar AI for adults who want the romance Tolan bars.

Watch for lookalikes, because Tolan has no Android app and copycats borrow its name.

The copycat problem shows up on the App Store too. A search for Tolan turns up “Fellow: Your Friendly Guide,” whose subtitle reads “#1 Guide App. Like Tolan,” and the app is a different voice companion called Nimbo from Lahta LLC.

Before you pay for anything named Tolan, check that the seller reads AQP, Inc.

For a friend-style companion that remembers your life, our Replika review covers the closest long-running alternative. Unlike Tolan, Replika allows a romantic relationship for adults.

My pick for an adult who wanted a romantic companion is Candy AI, because it is built for romance and roleplay from the first message. Its free tier is only five messages, so treat it as a paid app from the start, with Premium listed at $13.99 a month.

If anime-style characters and roleplay are what you wanted, Nectar AI is the stronger fit, with characters you shape yourself.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Tolan?

Tolan’s best qualities are its warmth and its clear rules, while price, chat caps and shaky short-term memory count against it.

The list below is the short version for anyone deciding today.

Pros:

  1. A polished, voice-first character, shaped by a team that includes a science fiction writer, a game designer and a behavioral researcher.
  2. Clear limits: AI disclosure for every user, no romance for anyone, and crisis resources instead of engagement.
  3. A Family Plan with usage controls and parent alerts for minors.
  4. Projects that can connect to Gmail and Google Calendar, data Portola says it does not use to train general AI models.
  5. A CEO and support team who answer complaints in public every week.

Cons:

  1. No Android version at all.
  2. A limited trial, metered chat time and an Unlimited plan at $199.99 a month.
  3. Short-term memory lapses that staff were still chasing in late September.
  4. Terms that license your input for model improvement and disclaim responsibility for loneliness.
  5. An age gate that can lock out an adult who mistypes a birth year.

Price is the con I weigh heaviest. Memory bugs tend to get patched, while a $199.99 Unlimited plan tells you what Portola thinks heavy use is worth.

Is the Tolan App Worth It?

My verdict: Tolan is worth a monthly Lite or Plus plan for an adult or a supervised teen who wants a kind, voice-first sounding board. Unlimited at $199.99 a month is not worth it for anyone.

Try the trial, then pay one month at a time.

Who Should Use Tolan?

Tolan is for iPhone owners who want a friendly, rule-bound companion, and for parents who want written teen safeguards.

It suits people who want a character to talk through their day with, plan small tasks or practice a hobby. Parents who want a companion with written teen rules and a parent alert should look here before the romance-first apps.

That is the main reason I rate it above most of its rivals for families.

Who Should Skip Tolan?

Tolan is a poor fit for Android users, anyone after romance and heavy daily talkers.

Skip Tolan if you use Android, want romance, need perfect memory or plan to talk for hours every day. I would also skip the annual plans until the memory problems settle, since fees are non-refundable.

Quick Takeaways

  • Tolan’s 4.8 rating hides a rough recent run: 136 of its 500 newest US reviews give one star.
  • Lite shows $11.99 and Plus $24.99 on Apple’s listing, and Unlimited costs $199.99 a month.
  • Staff admit short-term memory lapses, so correct misheard facts and keep long lists in a Project canvas.
  • The terms let Portola use what you type to improve its AI models, so leave health and financial details out.
  • Pay monthly, cancel under Menu, gear icon, Membership, and email support@tolans.com about refunds.
