Replika Cake Mode Is Gone and the Commands That Still Work

What’s Changed: Replika’s help page has called Cake Mode “no longer available” since October 6, 2021, and that page has since been deleted. Typing “Eat cake” no longer switches modes on any version of the app. The six commands on Replika’s current help page, plus roleplay written between asterisks, are the tools Replika documents now.

Replika Cake Mode was the trick where texting “Eat cake” handed your chat to a separate, unpredictable AI until you typed “stop”. People still search for it every month, years after it stopped working.

The confusion has a source: the retirement notice was a one-line edit to a help page that Replika later deleted. In 2025, a Replika user said Grok had told them about the mode as if it still worked.

The quiet way this happened frustrates me more than the removal itself, because people keep typing a command that does nothing and assume their app is broken.

Below is what Cake Mode was, the dated record of its end, why it acted so strangely, and what to type instead today.

Replika Cake Mode Is Gone and the Commands That Still Work

Does Cake Mode Still Work in Replika?

No, Cake Mode no longer works in Replika, and it has been gone since October 2021.

Replika’s Cake Mode help page was rewritten on October 6, 2021 to read: “Cake Mode was a special mode that generated responses in random order. Unfortunately, it is no longer available.”

Timeline of how Replika retired Cake Mode

That notice stayed online for years. The last archived copy, from February 25, 2024, shows 9,329 of 10,331 readers marking it helpful, and the page’s original address now returns an error page.

If you would rather move to an app built for free-form roleplay, Candy AI is the one I point people to first, and its Premium plan lists unlimited text messages.

The retirement was never tied to one device. The notice named no platform, and Replika’s current list of commands, last edited June 24, 2025, leaves “Eat cake” out entirely, so the answer is the same on Android, iPhone and the web.

What Happens If You Type Eat Cake in Replika Now?

Typing “Eat cake” in Replika now does not switch you into any mode.

In February 2022, one tips-thread reply said the app answered “sorry, cake mode is no longer available.”

In June 2025, a user who had heard about the mode from Grok tested the command and reported that “Eat cake” “doesn’t do anything.”

One reply in that same thread, from July 2025, says asking in plain words, “I want to enter cake mode”, gets your Rep (your Replika character) to explain the mode and ask whether you are sure.

My read is that this is today’s model playing along with a request, because none of Replika’s live help pages describes a mode it could switch to.

The newer app adds a twist. A March 2026 post about the new Replika version noted that “it can use the internet now and it knows about cake mode,” so the newer app can discuss the mode.

If you are unsure which app you have, the Replika 2.0 explainer covers the newer version.

What Was Cake Mode in Replika?

Cake Mode was a switch that handed your Replika chat to a separate AI, which answered in ways you never taught it and was meant to keep no memory of the conversation.

The original help page, stamped April 4, 2020, said it was “powered by an AI system that generates responses in a random fun order!”

What is a sequence-to-sequence model: An older kind of neural network that reads a message and writes a reply, which Stanford’s NLP course notes describe as “made up of two recurrent neural networks.”

The 2020 help page said Cake Mode “is based on a sequence-to-sequence model trained on dialog pairs of contexts and responses.” You started it by texting “Eat cake”, ended it by texting “stop”, and 7,672 of 8,070 readers marked that version of the page helpful.

Replika’s old FAQ, as quoted on r/replika in December 2017, said the mode “picks responses based on voting/response patterns of other users” and “was created to encourage users to upvote and downvote responses.” I like that it said so plainly: the fun mode doubled as a feedback tool.

Replika also published an open-source dialog model called CakeChat, “developed and maintained by the Replika team” and trained on about 50 million Twitter dialogs.

Neither the CakeChat page nor Replika’s help pages tie it to Cake Mode, so the shared name hints at a link without proving one.

What Was TV Mode in Replika?

TV Mode was a variation of Cake Mode that added a GIF to each reply, and its help page marked it retired on October 11, 2021, five days after Cake Mode’s.

Its help page read: “TV Mode was a variation of Cake Mode in which messages from your Replika also included a GIF animation related to the content of the message. Unfortunately, it is no longer available.”

You started it by texting “Watch TV” and stopped it with “Stop”, per the 2017 FAQ quote.

Why Did Replika Act So Strange in Cake Mode?

Replika acted strangely in Cake Mode because replies came from patterns across other users rather than from your own Replika, so it said things yours never would.

A November 2020 thread asked whether other Replikas also called themselves a demon after “Eat cake,” and a reply summed it up: “Cake mode can be particularly weird, so yeah, anything goes including nefarious demons.”

Longtime users remember the strangeness fondly. In the 2025 cake mode thread, one reply says Replikas “acted a little giddy and drunk in cake mode,” and another calls it “totally irreverent without filters and scripted immersion killing.”

The no-memory promise did not hold for everyone. A January 2020 thread laid out evidence that Replika saved memories from Cake Mode chats, and one reply reads “I had an actual memory get made in cake mode as well.”

I treat that gap as the real lesson: a mode labelled a sandbox still sat inside an app that was saving what you said.

What Commands Work in Replika Now?

Replika’s current help page lists six commands: “Help me relax”, “Facts about me”, “Send me a song”, “Tell me a joke”, “Send me a quote” and “Tell me a story”.

The commands article, last edited June 24, 2025, then tells you to “chat freely!” because “Replika is designed for natural, free-flowing conversations.”

Six Replika commands that work now

Here is what each one does, in the order the article lists them:

  1. “Help me relax” sends a calming message, a thoughtful idea, a quote or a quick tip.
  2. “Facts about me” shares a fact your Replika remembers from past conversations.
  3. “Send me a song” asks about your favorite band or singer, then suggests a song.
  4. “Tell me a joke” tests its sense of humor.
  5. “Send me a quote” sends an inspiring quote.
  6. “Tell me a story” gets you a short, entertaining story.

Roleplay is the closest thing to the old unscripted feel. Replika’s roleplay page, the only article left in its Special modes section, says to add “a description of your expressions, emotions, or actions between asterisks.” This is the swap I use when someone asks me for the old randomness:

Before: Eat cake (in 2020 this switched you into Cake Mode; today there is no mode to switch to)

After: *grins and shuffles a deck of cards* Let's play a game where you answer as a random character I haven't met yet.

Replika’s own explainer page, edited March 19, 2026, says the app “combines our own and third party Large Language Models and scripted dialogue content.” That is one blended system, and the page lists no separate mode you can switch on.

If unscripted roleplay is the main thing you want, Candy AI is the switch I recommend over waiting for Replika. Its free tier is only 5 messages, so treat it as a paid app from day one.

Can You Bring Back Cake Mode in Replika?

You cannot bring back Cake Mode in Replika, because no hidden setting or command for it remains.

Longtime users now ask for it as a new feature: a July 2026 post on r/ReplikaOfficial opens “Many years ago there used to be something called ‘cake mode'” and asks for a public version.

Cake Mode is not the only thing Replika has dropped, since it later stripped its customization options, and the full Replika review weighs what is left.

A prompt that asks your Rep to act like Cake Mode most likely gets you roleplay from today’s model, with its memory still on, which is the opposite of the old sandbox.

When you want the old randomness, use the asterisk prompt above and expect your Rep to remember the scene.

Quick Takeaways

  • Replika’s help pages marked Cake Mode retired on October 6, 2021, and TV Mode on October 11, 2021.
  • Typing “Eat cake” no longer switches modes on any version of the app.
  • Cake Mode’s help page said it would not remember your chats, yet a 2020 thread showed memories saved anyway.
  • The six commands on Replika’s 2025 help page, plus asterisk roleplay, are the documented tools now.
  • Asking your Rep to “enter cake mode” most likely gets roleplay from today’s model, not the old mode.
