At about 300 tokens a message, that holds roughly 25 to 30 messages before your opening scene is pushed out. That is why accents drift, eye colour changes, and a character stops referencing their own backstory.

There is a second drain most people never notice. The character’s definition and your persona are sent along with every message, so an elaborate personality sheet eats into the same budget before you have typed a word.

The fix, in my experience, is structural rather than conversational. Repeating “remember you are afraid of water” mid-chat spends tokens on the same budget that is already full, which is why it stops working after a while. Put the trait in a permanent lore or system-note field and it stays resident.

Here is what the platforms state. Blanks are marked honestly, and I would treat any roundup that fills them in confidently with more suspicion than trust.

Platforms that publish a token figure generally honour it. The ones selling memory as a mood, with no number attached anywhere in the marketing, are where I have been let down most often.

Character AI is the sharpest example, selling its c.ai+ plan on “the complete memory suite” without stating a single number.

SpicyChat’s context figures come from its plans page and a moderator’s September announcement of 32K models, and its prices from its September 2026 pricing FAQ. The 2,000-a-day cap for signed-in free accounts comes from the app’s own notice, and the guest figure of about 80 to 100 from a support reply.

Yodayo’s context sizes come from independent reviews, because its own pricing page would not load when I checked. Its content policy says “Explicit content is not allowed,” and R-rated content is opt-in.

Do You Have to Verify Your Age for NSFW AI Chat Now?

In several countries, yes, and the requirement is triggered by your IP address rather than your account.

Janitor AI’s own age verification documentation is unusually specific about the legal drivers. Verification through k-ID went live on 24 April 2026 for Australia under the Online Safety Act 2021, which carries a maximum penalty around AUD $35 million. Brazil’s check went live the same day under Lei 15.211/2025, with fines of up to $9.5 million.

The UK followed on 15 June 2026 under the Online Safety Act 2023, where the ceiling is £18 million. Those numbers explain the speed of adoption better than any statement about protecting users does.

Whether this is good for your privacy is genuinely contested, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. Platforms and vendors describe facial age estimation running on your device, documents deleted immediately after processing, and the platform receiving only a yes or no. The European Commission has set out an approach leaning in that same privacy-preserving direction.

Critics point at what happens when that pipeline fails. One age-verification vendor breach exposed roughly 70,000 Discord users’ ID photographs, which is the concrete counter-argument to every assurance about immediate deletion. Both things are true at once, and you are the one deciding which risk you prefer.

Whichever app you pick, use a throwaway email and keep identifying details out of your chats. Check whether the platform shares data with third parties before you verify anything.

State regulators are moving well past adult content now. Kentucky’s attorney general has sued the company behind Character AI over harms to children, and the theory of liability is widening from there.

You can spot a model switch by the tone collapse. Long, textured replies give way to short dramatic one-liners in the same scene, with no prompt change on your side.

Example scenario: You are 40 messages into a slow-burn scene on a platform with an 8K window. Ask your character to recall the nickname they gave you in message three and a small-window platform will invent a new one confidently, because the original is no longer in view. On a 32K window the original nickname is still resident and comes back verbatim: same prompt, same character, different token budget.

What Do These Platforms Really Cost Per Month

The advertised price is rarely the spend, because most of these platforms meter the features people came for in the first place.

Three mechanics do most of the damage, and I would check all three before subscribing to anything:

1. Credits that count both sides. CrushOn’s free plan gives 100 message credits a month, and its pricing page says “Both sent and received messages count toward credits,” so that is about 50 exchanges.
2. Expiring credits. Yodayo gives free users 50 credits a day and warns that the daily reward expires if you do not use it in time. That turns the free tier into a daily login habit.
3. Token metering on the good stuff. Candy AI’s Premium plan includes 100 tokens a month, and images, voice messages, calls and video all draw on them, so heavy users end up buying more tokens on top of the subscription.

Check how the free tier is counted too. Chai now charges free users one piece per message, and its founder raised the daily check-in from 20 pieces to 70 on October 6, 2026.

On the visual side, Candy AI is the one I would point most people to. Appearance and setting consistency genuinely holds across months, and it carries image, voice and video.

Conversational recall is the weak half. Ask it about a personal detail you shared three weeks ago and it drifts inside a handful of sessions.

The habit I would build is dull and takes ten minutes. Copy each character’s definition text into a plain file, save the greeting and any example dialogue with it, and keep the whole thing somewhere that is not the platform.
