Character AI no longer has a working status page. The address the company used for years, status.character.ai, now bounces to a deleted Atlassian page, so the honest answer to “is Character AI down” has to come from outage monitors and from the subreddit rather than from the company.
Google has not caught up with that yet. Search for character ai status page and the dead page is still the top organic result, with the deletion notice showing as its preview text.
Reuters reported in August 2024 that Character AI had grown into one of the largest consumer chatbot platforms before Google licensed its models and hired its cofounders. - Check r/CharacterAI. During an outage a status thread usually goes up near the top of the sub, under titles like “Site Status”, “Server Status” or “Character.AI Status”, and it is now the closest thing to an official acknowledgement.
- Check the unofficial X account. @c_aiStatus has roughly 18,000 followers and posts during outages. Its own bio states it is not affiliated with Character AI, so treat it as a quick community read and not a company channel.
- If all three look clear, the fault is local. Sign out and back in, clear cookies for character.ai, try another browser, and disable any extension that blocks scripts. Persistent login errors have their own separate set of fixes.
The September 5, 2026 outage shows how that plays out. A thread titled “Site Status (September 5, 2026)” went up at 18:24 UTC from an account carrying the “CAI Community Moderator” flair, reading “The team is currently looking into this interruption, and are working to fix this as soon as possible.” It collected 243 upvotes and 83 comments, and DownForEveryoneOrJustMe logged September 5 as two incidents running from 17:59 to 20:45 UTC, not one.
Three days later it happened again. A thread titled “We might be going down.” went up at 15:51 UTC on September 8, 2026 under the subreddit’s Site Down flair and gathered around 780 upvotes and 225 comments, one reply reading “It’s thrice bruh in 3 days.” Users reported the app showed the phrase Scheduled maintenance, and the subreddit did not take it at face value: one post argued that a scheduled maintenance is something a community is told about beforehand, and a commenter said the in-app wording later switched to blaming high load.
Why the Official Character AI Status Page Is Gone
Requesting status.character.ai on September 8, 2026 returns a 302 redirect to characteraistatus.statuspage.io, and that address serves Atlassian’s standard removal screen. The browser tab reads Statuspage deleted, and the body says the page “can still be recovered, but it will be permanently deleted soon.”
The removal runs deeper than a redirect. That deleted page still advertises its old feeds in its own HTML, and every one of them answers. Requesting history.rss, history.atom or api/v2/status.json on September 9, 2026 redirects to the same 24,898 byte deletion notice, not a feed and not JSON.

Why Character AI Goes Down
Without an incident history there is no first-party record of causes, so anything specific about a given outage is inference. The one pattern the public evidence does support is load. Character AI runs a throttle called Slow Mode that kicks in when traffic is heavy, which tells you demand regularly runs ahead of capacity.
Two other things get mistaken for downtime. Model rollouts change behaviour without taking the site offline, which is why a wave of “it is broken” posts tends to follow a chat style change, and why a sudden drop in reply quality is a separate problem from an outage.
Regional and network faults are the other. If the monitors are quiet and other people are fine, a DNS or ISP route is the likelier culprit, and switching to mobile data for a minute settles it.

Character AI has published nothing on whether an Ad Free Pass timer pauses, and the one user account on record says it does not. The top comment on the September 5 Site Status thread, at roughly 150 upvotes, said an Ad Free Pass was burning through its window while the site was unreachable, and asked whether anything would be done about it. None of the 83 comments carried a reply from an account with a moderator tag.

A one hour outage is worth waiting out. A recurring one, or an outage that lands in the middle of a long roleplay, is the point where most people keep a second platform open.
