Chai has been my go-to for AI character conversations since before it introduced paid tiers. I have used both the free and paid versions extensively, and the honest answer to “is Chai Premium worth it” depends almost entirely on one thing: how often the free allowance stops you.
Free accounts no longer get a timed message window. Since September 2026 nearly every free account pays at least one piece of Chai’s in-app currency per message. The daily check-in pays 70 pieces under the change Chai’s founder announced on 6 October, plus 5 for each rewarded ad.
That works out to roughly 70 messages a day before you spend money, fewer if you regenerate replies, since a reroll costs a piece too. It covers light use and runs dry fast in a long roleplay, which is the wall Premium is sold to remove.

What You Get With Chai Premium
Chai Premium costs $13.99 a month or $134.99 a year on the US App Store and comes with unlimited messages, which Chai’s founder confirmed for subscribers on 8 September 2026.
The four things you get, and the limits that come with them:
- Unlimited messages. When a user asked whether subscribers would pay pieces too, the founder replied, “Without subscription. Subscriptions are still unlimited messages.”
- Fewer ads. Free users watch rewarded ads to earn pieces, 5 at a time, and a subscription with unlimited messages has nothing to top up.
- Memory that still runs short. A two-year Premium user wrote in r/ChaiApp’s October feedback thread that “I can get to about 15-20 messages and then the 4K memory is used up.”
- Not the newest models. A CHAI Team email that a user shared says some advanced models can still cost pieces for subscribers, and Ultra subscribers name Max and Eternal as the ones they pay for.
Ultra’s extras, Chai’s Ultra chat model and about double the memory by subscriber reports, sit behind Chai Ultra at $29.99 a month. Premium removes the pieces meter for everyday chats.

Unlimited messages are the reason to buy Premium, and everything else on the list is incremental. The web app at chai-ai.com is a separate product with its own Pro plan at $9.99 a week or $159.99 a year, and Chai’s FAQ says it shares no data with the app.
What Chai Gives You Free Under the Pieces System
Free Chai accounts get a 70-piece daily check-in and 5 pieces per rewarded ad, and every message costs at least one piece, so most free users get about 70 messages a day.
The check-in also has a ceiling. Chai’s founder wrote on 28 September that once a balance passes 100 pieces the daily check-in disappears and returns when it runs low, which stops anyone from stockpiling a free week.
Beyond the check-in, pieces cost money: the US App Store sells 200 for $2.79, 500 for $6.99 and 1,000 for $13.99, the same price as a month of Premium. The full rules are in how Chai’s pieces system works.
This design is intentional. Chai’s founder blamed GPU prices that had “doubled this year” when he announced pieces, months after Chai paywalled free users in some regions. Chai’s own safety center now says that in some regions the service requires a paid subscription.
The free tier now works as a metered trial, and Premium and Ultra are the plans Chai’s founder said keep messages unlimited.
Chai Premium vs Chai Ultra
Premium buys unlimited messages for $13.99 a month, per Chai’s founder in September, and Ultra adds Chai’s Ultra chat model and about double the memory, by subscriber reports, for $16 more.

My own setup: I run Premium for daily use and find it adequate for most conversations. I have tried Ultra and the model quality improvement is real, but not dramatic enough to justify the price difference unless you are using Chai as your primary AI companion.
Three questions to help you decide which tier fits:
- Do you run out of free pieces most days? If yes, Premium.
- Does the bot lose track of your story after 15 or 20 messages? If yes, look at Ultra or an app with more memory.
- Do you use Chai a few times a week at most? If yes, stick with free.
Is Chai Premium Worth the Price
At $13.99 a month, Chai Premium is worth it for daily users who run through the 70 free pieces and want unlimited messages. It is not worth it for occasional users, or for anyone mainly chasing memory or the newest models.
The clearest case for Premium is the annual plan. At $134.99 a year, about $11.25 a month, the price drops low enough to justify even for moderate users. The $13.99 monthly plan makes sense only if you already run out of pieces most days.
Before you pay, open the paywall in your own app. Chai’s founder called the new Ruby and Diamond plans “an A/B test” on 7 October and pitched them to non-subscribers as “a chance to access an ad-free experience with monthly pieces.”
A CHAI Team email a user shared says plans and free-message setups differ between users, regions and usage. It also says an existing Google Play subscription carries on as long as it renews without a break, so cancelling and resubscribing is a risk if you want to keep Premium.
The clearest case against Premium is if you mainly browse characters and try short conversations. The free check-in covers that, and the pieces meter only bites people who commit to longer sessions.
Who should subscribe:
- Daily users who run out of the 70 free pieces most days
- Anyone doing creative roleplay that requires extended back-and-forth
- People tired of watching ads to earn pieces
Who should skip:
- Occasional users who visit a few times per week
- Anyone mainly after memory or the newest models, which Premium does not solve
- Free users who still end the day with pieces left
