The Verdict: ChatGPT is the better buy for most people, because its free tier includes unlimited everyday text chat and Plus costs $20 a month. Grok is worth paying for if you live on X, want live news and AI video, or already pay for X Premium, since its new $30 Premium plan bundles all of that into one bill.
Grok vs ChatGPT used to be a simple $30 against $20 question. On October 12, xAI replaced that math with The X Subscription, and its new entry plan is an $8 tier called Plus, the same name ChatGPT uses for its $20 plan.
Older comparisons still price Grok at $30 for SuperGrok, a plan that no longer appears on xAI’s pricing page for new buyers. The model race also moved, with GPT-6 Astra reaching ChatGPT in September and Grok 4.7 arriving the same month.
I care less about which model wins a benchmark than about where each paywall sits.
So this comparison starts with what $0, $8, $20 and $30 buy on each side, then goes use by use, from writing and coding to images, news and roleplay.

Grok vs ChatGPT, Which One Should You Pay For?
ChatGPT is the better buy for most people, while Grok is the better buy for heavy X users who want live news, AI video and a looser, blunter tone.

One group neither app serves well anymore: adults who came to Grok for Ani and its other animated companions, which xAI retired in September.
For them, Candy AI is the companion app I point people to instead, since it is built for exactly that and is 18+ only.
| What matters most to you | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest paid plan | Tie | ChatGPT Go and Grok Plus both cost $8 a month |
| A strong free tier | ChatGPT | Everyday text chat is unlimited on Free, while Grok’s free use is limited |
| Writing and coding | ChatGPT | More polished, more predictable output |
| Breaking news and X posts | Grok | It searches X live |
| AI video | Grok | Video generation comes with Premium at $30 |
| Still images | Tie | Both include image creation from their $8 plans |
| Adult roleplay or a companion | Neither | Both pulled back from it in 2026 |
ChatGPT wins on value and polish, and Grok wins on news speed and video. Price settles most of these calls, so the plan-by-plan numbers come next.
How Much Do Grok and ChatGPT Cost Now?
Grok costs $0, $8, $30, $100 or $200 a month on The X Subscription, and ChatGPT costs $0 for Free, $8 for Go, $20 for Plus, or $100 to $500 for its three Pro tiers.

xAI announced The X Subscription on October 12, 2026, putting “Grok, Grok Bot, Cursor, and X Premium, all on one plan.” TechCrunch confirmed the five plans the next day: free, Plus at $8, Premium at $30, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200.
Here is what each price point buys on both sides.
| Monthly price | Grok (The X Subscription) | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| $0 | Free: limited Grok chat, voice and images | Free: unlimited everyday text chat, with limited images, voice and deep research |
| $8 | Plus: Grok chat, voice, Imagine images, Cursor, an X checkmark and fewer ads on X, but no video and no Grok Bot | Go: more messages with tools, more uploads, images and voice, and a plan that may include ads |
| $20 | No plan at this price | Plus: GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol, more images and expanded deep research |
| $30 | Premium: 4x the Plus usage, video, Grok Bot and the benefits of SuperGrok, Cursor Pro and X Premium+ | No plan at this price |
| $100 to $500 | Super at $100 (15x Plus usage) and Ultra at $200 (50x) | Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500, with Ultrafast only on Pro 500 |
The word Plus now means three different plans, and it trips people up. Grok’s new Plus costs $8 and has no video, while the old SuperGrok Plus cost $100. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month.
At $8, I lean toward Grok Plus if you post on X, because the X checkmark and fewer ads come with it. If you never open X, ChatGPT Go is the better $8, since ChatGPT’s everyday text chat is already unlimited on Free and Go raises the limits on images, uploads and voice.
Billing works differently too. xAI sells Premium for $300 a year, which works out to $25 a month. OpenAI’s Go help page says it does not support annual billing for Go, Plus or Pro.
If you already pay for SuperGrok, nothing forces a move. xAI’s announcement says “Nothing changes for existing SuperGrok, Cursor, or X Premium subscribers,” and its switching guide warns that “A completed switch is permanent and cannot be undone by Support.”
The Grok app’s App Store page still lists SuperGrok purchases, from SuperGrok Lite at $10 to SuperGrok Heavy at $300, even though xAI’s own pricing page now shows only the five new plans.
The older SuperGrok lineup covers those legacy plans, and Grok’s weekly usage pool explains how the 4x, 15x and 50x multipliers draw down.
Is ChatGPT or Grok Better for Coding?
ChatGPT is the safer pick for coding, though Grok’s $30 Premium plan includes Cursor Pro benefits that a developer would otherwise pay for on top.
OpenAI’s release notes introduced GPT-6 Astra on September 3, 2026 “with improvements in coding, research, computer use, and complex, multi-step work,” and Plus subscribers get it.
For multi-file projects and careful debugging, ChatGPT’s steadier output is the reason I still reach for it first.
Grok’s case is the bundle. Premium carries “The benefits of SuperGrok, Cursor Pro, and X Premium+, previously $90/month combined,” per xAI’s announcement.
Cursor Pro is the paid tier of the Cursor code editor, so a developer already paying for it gets Grok and X for close to the same money.
Is ChatGPT or Grok Better for Writing?
ChatGPT is better for polished, structured writing, while Grok is blunter and less likely to flatter you, which helps when you want honest feedback.
The tone gap shows up fast. One reply in an r/artificial thread put it this way: “Grok will tell me if I’m wrong. ChatGPT will write a paragraph on how amazing and special I am.”
Example scenario: You want a cover letter that reads clean and professional, so ChatGPT drafts it. Then you want someone to tell you the letter is boring, so you paste it into Grok and ask for the harshest critique it can give.
For study work, my one rule with Grok is to check every fact it adds, because a confident tone is not the same as a correct answer.
ChatGPT Plus also adds projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs, which suit longer study and writing projects.
Is Grok or ChatGPT Better for Images?
Grok is the pick if you want AI video, which its X Subscription includes from the $30 Premium plan, while ChatGPT includes image creation on every plan and makes it unlimited on Pro.
On xAI’s pricing page, Grok’s Imagine images are limited on Free and included from Plus, while video generation starts at Premium.
Video is the one feature that makes me take Grok’s $30 tier seriously against ChatGPT’s $20 Plus.
ChatGPT launched Images 2.5 on September 8, 2026, with “sharper details, more precise editing, and faster image generation.” Its image creation is limited on Free, expands on Go and Plus, and becomes unlimited on Pro.
ChatGPT’s image generator has its own breakdown if images are your main use.
Does Grok Know the News Faster Than ChatGPT?
Grok is better for breaking news and trending posts because it searches X live, while ChatGPT searches the web on every plan and suits researched answers better.
xAI describes Grok as searching “the web and 𝕏 live, so answers always reflect what’s happening right now.” For anything that broke in the last hour, I check Grok first and then confirm the story at its source.
Live access is only as good as the lookup behind it. A user in an r/ChatGPT thread wrote that Grok “told me an entire made up plot of several movies” when its search tool was unavailable, instead of saying it did not know.
Is Grok or ChatGPT Better for Roleplay?
Neither is a good roleplay or companion app anymore, because xAI retired Grok’s animated companions and its adult voice personalities in September, and OpenAI paused its planned adult mode indefinitely.
Grok’s companions began disappearing on September 1, 2026, account by account. Between September 3 and 14, xAI also removed all five of its 18+ voice personalities, as the Unhinged mode breakdown records.
OpenAI went the same way. TechCrunch reported in March that the company was “indefinitely” pausing plans for an “erotic” mode for ChatGPT. Its help center also says ChatGPT may answer “Sexual, romantic, or violent roleplay” more cautiously when the Reduce sensitive content setting is on.
What survives on Grok is image work. Grok’s Spicy mode still exists on the mobile app for paid, age-verified users, and it covers images and video only.
That pullback is why I send adults who want a steady companion to a dedicated app. Candy AI costs $13.99 a month after a $9.99 first month and includes unlimited chat, though it runs in the browser rather than as a phone app.
Anime and character-card fans tend to fit Nectar AI better, and its free plan allows 15 messages a day before you pay.
Who Should Choose Grok?
Choose Grok if you live on X, want live news and AI video, or already pay for X Premium+ or Cursor Pro, since the $30 Premium plan bundles all of it.
Grok earns the money when at least two of these apply to you:
- You follow breaking news and trends on X and want answers built from live posts.
- You want AI video, which starts at the $30 Premium plan.
- You already pay for X Premium+ or Cursor Pro, whose benefits Premium now includes.
- You prefer a blunt tone over a polished one.
I would not pay for Premium on the strength of one reason alone, since ChatGPT Plus costs $10 less. Premium also adds Grok Bot, xAI’s agent, which xAI’s docs say the $8 Plus plan does not include.
Who Should Choose ChatGPT?
Choose ChatGPT if you want the strongest free tier, polished writing and coding help, voice chat on every plan, or a $20 plan with no X account attached.
ChatGPT Plus is my default recommendation for a first AI subscription. It brings GPT-6 Astra for hard tasks, and voice chat comes on every plan, including Free, since OpenAI rolled out its GPT-Live voice model to all consumer plans in July.
Heavy users can climb to OpenAI’s three Pro tiers at $100, $200 or $500, and Pro adds Dot, ChatGPT’s always-on agent. If you are weighing ChatGPT against a character app instead of against Grok, Character AI vs ChatGPT covers that choice.
Safety settings differ as well. ChatGPT’s App Store listing is rated 13+, and accounts it judges to be teens keep extra protections until the user verifies an age of 18 or older.
Grok’s iOS app is rated 16+, and whether Grok is safe covers its privacy record in more depth.
Quick Takeaways
- ChatGPT is the better buy for most people, with unlimited everyday text chat on Free and Plus at $20 a month.
- Grok’s new $8 Plus is not the old $100 SuperGrok Plus, and its video generation starts at the $30 Premium plan.
- Grok wins for breaking news on X, AI video and people who already pay for X Premium+ or Cursor Pro.
- If you are on SuperGrok, switching to The X Subscription is permanent, so compare the plans before you move.
- Neither app is built for companionship anymore, so adults who want a steady companion are better served by a dedicated app.
