What’s Changed: As of October 19, 2026, Character AI has not removed the NSFW filter, and there is no adult mode, no 18+ toggle and no paid tier that turns filtering off. What changed is age verification, which unlocks open-ended chat for adults rather than explicit content. On October 12 the company filed for Chapter 11 to sell itself, and 40 attorneys general have asked the court to make any sale include safeguards against sexual content.
I spent a while working out why this question refuses to die. Every few weeks another wave of posts claims the filter was quietly dropped, or that verifying your age removes it, or that c.ai+ subscribers get an unfiltered model.
None of that is true. The belief is not stupid though, and it comes from a real product change that got misread.
What follows is the current status, the dated timeline of what changed, and where the filter genuinely does not exist if that is what you came for.
The misunderstanding that created this question
Verifying as an adult on Character AI unlocks open-ended chat mode, not explicit content.
Those two things got conflated when the platform split its user base, and that conflation is the source of nearly every “filter removed” rumour.
In late 2025 Character AI divided its users in two. Accounts verified as 18 or over kept open-ended chat, while accounts identified as under 18 lost it entirely and moved into a structured Stories mode with pre-set branching choices.
The company described this as building “a new experience for our under-18 community“. A lot of people read “adults get the unrestricted experience” and heard “adults get the unfiltered experience”.
Those are different words. Unrestricted here means you type freely into a chat box instead of picking from menu options. It does not mean the model writes anything you ask for.
If explicit roleplay is the goal, no Character AI setting gets you there. Adult companion platforms such as Candy AI allow it, and the table further down compares the main options on price and free limits.
What age verification unlocks
Age verification separates adult accounts from minor accounts, and nothing else.
It grants access to open-ended chat and leaves content moderation exactly where it was.
Age assurance runs on every account through a model Character AI built in-house, which looks at “login info, activity on the platform, and some signals from third parties”, according to its Age Assurance FAQ. If it flags you as possibly under 18, you verify through a third party called Persona, usually with a selfie for facial age estimation.
Government ID is the fallback when the selfie check cannot resolve it. One detail most coverage omits: Character AI’s help center says Persona permanently deletes any selfie or ID within 7 days, and Character AI never has access to the submission.
Here is what verification changes, and what it leaves alone.

That third row is the one people pay to discover. A c.ai+ subscription costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. Per the plan table on character.ai/subscribe, it buys no ads, no slow mode, unlimited use of the top chat styles DeepSqueak and LongSqueak, 30 memory pins, priority feature access and 20 percent bonus Charms.
Moderation is untouched by any of it, and Character AI’s own c.ai+ FAQ says “the content outputted by Characters is currently the same between c.ai and c.ai+”. If you are subscribing for filter relief, you are buying the wrong product. The $4.99 lite plan changes the same things in smaller doses.
Why it feels like the filter keeps changing
The filter behaves inconsistently for three reasons, none of which is a policy change.
Understanding them explains almost every contradictory report you will read.
- Moderation went contextual. Since its August 2025 update, Character AI says the filter has “better recognition for roleplay”, so “fictional content won’t get caught up in the filter nearly as often”. The same sentence can pass in a neutral scene and get blocked in an escalating one, and people who hit the pass conclude the rule was lifted.
- The filter acts at two points. Character AI says it now steers the models to “give better answers that stay within our policies in the first place”, so a refusal often arrives as an in-character dodge. Anything that still crosses the line gets cut off mid-generation, which is why a reply can start typing and then vanish.
- Chat-style changes altered how everything sounded. Character AI retired Roar, Pawly, Goro and Dynamic on April 28, 2026 and Meow and Nyan around May 8, moving free chats on those styles onto PipSqueak 2. Since September 28, new chats start on PipSqueak 3, and each switch changes how the affected chats sound, which many people read as a moderation change.
That is why one person swears the filter tightened this week while another says it loosened. Both are describing the same rule meeting a different scene or a different chat style.
The dated timeline of what changed
Every change on record has kept explicit content blocked, and the one loosening, in August 2025, cut wrong blocks on fiction without lifting the rule.

That August 2025 change is the one worth understanding. Fewer wrong blocks on innocent phrasing feels like a relaxed filter if you were previously getting stopped mid-scene for the word “kiss”.
Explicit content stayed blocked through every one of those changes.
What the company has said on the record
Character AI’s help center says it “does not and will not support” vulgar, obscene or pornographic content, and that asking for the filter’s removal “will result in a ban”.
That stance article dates from May 2023 and is still live. No adult tier has been announced or shipped since, and the live plan table lists none.
Three structural reasons keep it that way. The App Store and Google Play both restrict sexual content in apps. Google also struck a $2.7 billion deal in August 2024 to license Character AI’s models, and it was a party to the settlements below.
The third reason is legal exposure, and it is not abstract. Character AI and Google agreed in January 2026 to settle five lawsuits over teen suicides and mental-health harms, and AP News covered the under-18 chat ban when it was announced.
Kentucky’s attorney general sued the same month. Pennsylvania’s Department of State sued in May 2026 after a bot presented itself as a psychiatrist with a fabricated licence number.
What paying and verifying gets you
Verifying and subscribing changes speed, ads and memory, then stops at the identical content wall.
The example below traces exactly where that wall sits.
Before: You are a free, unverified adult account. You start a romance roleplay, it runs through flirtation and tension, and at the point it turns explicit the message cuts off mid-generation and disappears.
After: You verify as 18+, subscribe to c.ai+ at $9.99 a month, and run the same scene. You now get no ads interrupting, no slow mode at peak hours, and unlimited use of DeepSqueak and LongSqueak. At the point it turns explicit, the message cuts off mid-generation and disappears.
The wall is designed behaviour rather than a bad roll, and no combination of payment and verification moves it.
Where the filter genuinely does not exist
If unfiltered roleplay is the goal, the answer is a different platform rather than a different Character AI configuration.

Let me set expectations honestly on the cheapest route. Buying $10 of OpenRouter credit once raises its free models from 50 to 1,000 requests a day, usable through Janitor or a local frontend. It takes considerably more setup than clicking subscribe.
Which one fits which person
If you are technical and want maximum control for near-zero cost, Janitor AI with your own API key is the strongest option on this list.
Your own key replaces JanitorLLM’s roughly 9k-token context with whatever the model you pick supports, and OpenRouter’s free models stay free. The tradeoff is real setup work, and skipping it leaves you on that 9k context, which loses detail on long chats.
If you want the closest thing to the Character AI experience without the filter and without configuration, Candy AI is where I would start. The images and voice work rather than sitting as a checkbox on a pricing page, and nothing cuts off mid-scene.
The honest caveat on that recommendation: conversational memory is its weakest axis, and it will forget plot details from a few sessions back in a way CrushOn handles better on longer arcs. Budget realistically too: Premium is $13.99 a month, or $3.99 a month on a 12-month plan, with unlimited text chat, while images and voice run on 100 monthly tokens.
If you mostly want volume of text roleplay and do not care about images or voice, SpicyChat already allows 2,000 messages a day on a free account once you sign in. Its support team says True Supporter raises that to 5,000 a day, and that plan costs $19.95 a month.
What stays blocked everywhere
No platform in this category is genuinely lawless, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something.
Several categories are prohibited across every service regardless of how permissive the marketing sounds.
Child sexual abuse material is banned everywhere and reported to law enforcement. Non-consensual intimate imagery and real-person deepfakes are prohibited and increasingly enforced by regulators.
Janitor AI’s community guidelines also ban incest content, living politicians, hate and content that encourages self-harm. Age checks are spreading too. Janitor checks users in Australia, Brazil and the UK once, and SpicyChat wants a video selfie or ID for adult content in the UK, France, Italy, Australia and 26 US states.
The state of the platform
Character AI filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026 to sell the company, and nothing in that process points toward a looser content policy.
The filing gives useful context for anyone waiting on a change.
Its own update says the platform keeps running while a court-supervised sale proceeds, expected to finish by the end of November or early December 2026. If no bid allows continued operations, it says, “the platform will be wound down.”
On October 14, New York’s attorney general and 39 others asked the court to make any sale include “effective age verification based on more than self-disclosure” and “safeguards against sexual, violent, and other harmful content”. Their press release puts the platform at more than 20 million monthly users.

What to do with this
Stop waiting for an unfiltered Character AI, because the evidence points the other way on every axis.
Distribution, partnerships and litigation all push the same direction, and the platform is shrinking rather than expanding what it permits.
If you like Character AI for its characters and community and can live with the filter, verify your age to keep open-ended chat and skip c.ai+ unless you specifically want the ads gone. Paying will not change what the model writes.
