What’s Changed (updated 15 September 2026): Chai AI paywalled free users in 22 countries in February 2026, the regions where its ads do not cover GPU costs, and by early April message limits had spread to free users elsewhere as Chai put subscribers first. The rollout is uneven, hitting some users with hard paywalls and leaving others untouched. Since September 2026 free accounts are also moving to pieces, an in-app currency with a small free daily allowance, where every message costs at least one piece.
Users on r/ChaiApp spent early April 2026 asking versions of the same question, and one post on 10 April was titled simply “what just happened”.
Chai’s message-limits megathread drew more than 500 comments because the experience was abrupt and inconsistent.
Some users hit a hard paywall mid-conversation. Others saw their daily free message limit cut sharply. A portion of users saw no change at all, which only added to the confusion.
Chai is tightening its free tier to push users toward paid subscriptions, as many freemium apps eventually do. Character AI ran its own squeeze in 2026 by putting ads in free chats, and its community has been trading tips on how to get rid of the ads in their chats.
What made the rollout frustrating is how unevenly it landed from one account to the next.

What Actually Happened With Chai AI This Week
Chai AI paywalled free users in 22 countries in early February 2026, the regions where its ads do not cover GPU costs, and by early April its message limits had spread to free users in other regions because, in its founder’s words, “We must prioritize subscribers first.”

The rollout is region-specific, which is why the experience is inconsistent. Users in some regions hit a hard paywall that blocks access without a subscription.
Others saw a reduced free message allowance with a prompt to upgrade. A third group saw no change at all, and users say the criteria were never explained.
The current Chai app tiers, as the US App Store listing showed them on 15 September 2026:
| Tier | US price | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Daily free pieces since September 2026 (a 200-piece pack costs $2.79), blocked outright in some regions |
| Chai Premium | $13.99/month, or $134.99/year | Unlimited messages |
| Chai Ultra | $29.99/month or $19.99/week | Unlimited messages plus the Ultra model |
Prices vary by region and platform, and the web version is a separate product. Chai’s web pricing page sells Pro at $9.99 a week or $159.99 a year, and its FAQ says the web and app platforms share no data.
Why Chai AI Is Doing This
Chai AI is monetizing because AI inference costs per conversation are real, and a platform that has scaled to millions of users cannot run on advertising revenue alone.
Chai’s founder said as much in his 8 September 2026 update: “as the price of GPU’s has doubled this year, this unlimited model is no longer sustainable.” Free accounts are moving to a daily allowance of pieces instead, and how the Chai message limit works with pieces covers the check-in and the per-message cost.
From what I saw in the community response, most of the frustration was about how the change was delivered. Many users accept that running AI conversations at scale costs money.
The problem is that a sudden paywall mid-conversation, with no warning email or in-app notice, feels like the platform broke rather than changed its terms.
Chai is not alone in this pattern. Character AI tightened its free tier earlier this year, and the community reaction was similar: sharp initial anger, followed by a segment of users who subscribed and a segment who moved to alternatives.
Chai’s founder gave the reason for the regional part in his 5 February 2026 announcement: ads in countries such as India, Pakistan and Egypt do not earn enough to cover the GPU bill, while the US, Europe, Canada and Japan “will stay free.”
That is standard pricing strategy, but it makes the experience feel arbitrary to users who do not know why their account behaves differently from their friend’s.
What to Do If You Hit the Chai AI Paywall
If you hit the Chai AI paywall, claim your daily pieces first, then choose between subscribing, waiting for the rollout to change, or switching to an alternative.
- Claim your daily pieces. Open your profile, tap Charge and claim the daily check-in before deciding the paywall has locked you out.
- Check if it’s regional. Disable location services and try accessing via a different connection. Some users reached Chai through a VPN pointed at a less-restricted region, but a July community summary says the app has since patched that route.
- Try the web version. The old chat.chai.ml address no longer resolves, and Chai’s web app now lives at chai-ai.com. It is free to start, but it is a separate account system with its own Pro plan.
- Contact Chai support. If your account was abruptly cut off without warning, a support ticket is worth submitting, though users report copy-paste replies. Chai’s founder also answers some account problems in r/ChaiApp, and on 13 September he asked one user there for their user ID.
- Consider a free alternative. If the paywall is permanent in your region and the subscription price is too high, test the alternatives below on their free plans before paying for any of them.
The Best Free Chai AI Alternatives Right Now
Candy AI and CrushOn AI are the two alternatives worth trying, with one caveat on cost: Candy AI’s free plan is a 5-message trial, so plan on paying if it suits you.

Candy AI is the most polished of the Chai alternatives, though its free plan is only a trial.
Candy AI’s own help center caps free users at 5 messages across all characters, one custom character and one image. Paid plans run $13.99 a month, or $3.99 a month billed yearly at $47.88.
CrushOn AI also has a limited free plan, with paid Standard, Premium and Deluxe tiers above it.
How the four compare on price:
| Platform | Free tier | Starting paid plan |
|---|---|---|
| Chai AI | Daily pieces, blocked in some regions | $13.99/month, or $134.99/year |
| Candy AI | 5-message trial | $13.99/month, or $3.99/month billed yearly |
| CrushOn AI | Limited free plan | $5.99/month (per 2026 reviews) |
| Nomi AI | Free with limits | $15.99/month (Standard), or $99.99/year |
Quick Takeaways
- Chai AI paywalled 22 countries in February 2026, message limits reached free users elsewhere by April, and since September free accounts are moving to a daily allowance of pieces
- The rollout is uneven by region and platform, which is why some users see changes and others do not
- Chai Premium lists at $13.99/month and Chai Ultra at $29.99/month on the US App Store, and both still include unlimited messages
- If you are locked out, claim the daily check-in pieces first, then try the web version at chai-ai.com or contact support with your user ID
- Candy AI and CrushOn AI are the alternatives to try, but Candy AI’s free plan is a 5-message trial

I believe that maybe now or so on, the problem of chai got solved sooner, as a part of the community. I must say the experience for this are so fascinating and a very excellent, currently this month of April I am having a difficult and stressing day because i don’t even know what to do, because i had no money to buy a premium chai to chat to the characters. Chai is my only habit to let my stress go away, so i am so sad that this happened… i heard many users are getting sad on these new changes… and currently i also affected. So, i hope maybe next month or year, it will come back to normal again.
Hey Marlon, totally hear you on this. When you have built a daily stress-relief routine around an app and the experience suddenly changes, it really does sting.
A few alternatives like Janitor AI and Spicy Chat are still free with no paywalls for now if you need something in the meantime. Chai has adjusted their pricing before, so there is a chance they revisit this if the user backlash gets loud enough.
Why won’t Chai open for me?
