The filter stays on paid plans too. Chai’s web plans advertise priority response speed, no ads and its most advanced chat AI, and none of them mentions a looser filter.

The AI companion app market has grown fast enough to make this a crowded field. App intelligence firm Appfigures counted 337 revenue-generating AI companion apps worldwide by mid-2025, 128 of them launched that year, according to TechCrunch.

One caveat before you commit. SpicyChat’s free access is real, but it comes with trade-offs. Its plan table lists no message allowance for any tier, and its support team said on 25 September 2026 that the limit people hit, around 80 to 100 messages, applies to users who have not signed in.

Signed-in free accounts get a 4,096-token memory and replies capped at 180 tokens, and SpicyChat’s help centre says free accounts are queued during heavy traffic. Those are the costs of not paying, so sign in before you judge the free tier.

CrushOn AI vs Chai on Price

CrushOn AI is the best value no-filter alternative if you want unrestricted conversations without a high monthly fee.

The free tier gives you 100 message credits a month, and when they run out CrushOn moves you to a free model with limited memory and speed. The lowest paid tier is Standard at $5.99 a month, less than half the price of Chai Premium.

From what I’ve seen in longer sessions, CrushOn AI holds character consistency better than most at this price range. Characters remember context within a single session reliably, and conversation quality stays stable across longer threads.

The character library has over 1,000 options covering anime, original, and fictional archetypes.

Where CrushOn AI falls behind is image generation. If you want companions who can generate images within the chat, this isn’t the right pick.

I’d go with the Standard tier first. At $5.99 a month it costs about $72 a year, or $58.88 on CrushOn’s yearly plan, against $134.99 for a year of Chai Premium. CrushOn counts both your messages and the bot’s replies against the 2,000 credits, so budget for roughly 1,000 exchanges a month.

Candy AI is the top Chai alternative if you want a companion that remembers conversations across sessions and can generate images.

Candy keeps a long-term memory for each conversation, so a companion remembers what you told it when you come back, and its Premium Plus tier adds 20 memory slots.

Image generation is where Candy AI leads this list. Mid-conversation, your companion can generate a new image based on what’s happening in the story.

Nectar’s plans include photo messages and SpicyChat adds conversation images from its $19.95 True Supporter tier, but Candy puts pictures at the centre of its product.

Premium costs $13.99 month to month, or $3.99 a month billed yearly at $47.88, and includes unlimited text messages, as my Candy AI review covers. The free tier is only 5 messages in total, so plan on paying if Candy suits you.

Pictures are where the bill moves. Premium includes 100 tokens a month, Candy publishes no per-image price list, and its own referral page values 200 tokens at $20, about 10 cents a token.

So if images are the reason you want Candy, budget for token top-ups on top of the subscription.

It works well, and the quality of conversations reflects a more polished AI model than what Chai’s free bots use.

Nectar AI is the right pick if you want one dedicated companion rather than a library of characters.

The platform centers on the relationship dynamic between user and companion, with features built around emotional consistency and long-term memory rather than character variety.

The distinction from Candy AI is real: Candy AI gives you more tools and flexibility across different characters. Nectar AI gives you a companion that feels singular and focused on your specific history with it.

If you want one character who knows you well across many sessions, Nectar AI handles that better than most platforms in this space.

Nectar costs $9.99 a month for Premium, $19.99 for Pro and $34.99 for Ultimate, or $59.99, $119.99 and $179.99 a year. Janitor AI is the best free option on this list: its own FAQ promises unlimited chats on its standard models, and an API key lets you pick a stronger one.

The API setup takes about 10 minutes, and once it’s running you can point Janitor at almost any model a provider sells.

Janitor’s subscription FAQ lists the free tier as “Unlimited chats with millions of bots” on its standard chat models, with a context limit of around 9k tokens. That memory ceiling is what pushes long-story players toward an API key, and the free proxy models carry daily limits of their own.

A common paid route is a DeepSeek API key, billed per token. DeepSeek’s price list charges $0.15 per million input tokens and $0.60 per million output tokens for V4.1 Flash off-peak, so a reply that re-reads 8,000 tokens of chat and writes 300 new ones costs about 0.14 cents. At a hundred replies a day that is about $4 a month off-peak, cheaper than any month-to-month plan on this list, or about $8 if every reply lands in DeepSeek’s weekday peak hours.

Janitor launched its first subscription, janitor+, on 24 June 2026 at $12.99 a month, and some web accounts now see a $99 yearly option. It buys 5x more context, priority replies and monthly swipes on Janitor’s best models, and whether janitor+ is worth it mostly depends on how long your stories run.

Users connecting from Australia, Brazil or the UK must also pass a one-time k-ID age check, which Janitor says it has no plans to extend to other regions.

Of the five picks above, Janitor AI and CrushOn AI install as apps on both iPhone and Android. Janitor is on the App Store and Google Play, CrushOn sends iPhone users to an App Store app listed as Crushmash and offers Android users a direct APK, SpicyChat offers an official Android app from its own site, and Candy AI and Nectar AI run in a mobile browser.

This matters more than a feature table suggests. Chai was a mobile-first app, so most people leaving it are on a phone, and being told to bookmark a website is a real downgrade in daily use.

If an installable app is what you care about, start with Janitor AI or CrushOn AI on either phone, or SpicyChat on Android. Candy AI’s help centre says it has no native iOS or Android app and points phone users to a progressive web app instead.

There is a middle path worth knowing. The names Chai users pass around in their own forums are not the names on this list, or on any comparable roundup. FictionLab, SeaSoul and Emochi come up again and again in r/Chai_Unofficial, and none of them appear in a mainstream comparison.

The most useful answers on this topic sit in Reddit threads and Facebook groups, which shows the community trusts lived experience here more than it trusts articles.

FictionLab keeps a free tier alongside a paid FictionLab+ plan. Users praise its bot creation depth and memory. The recurring complaint is that the free tier writes in a noticeably synthetic voice, and that porting an existing character across is slow enough that one user spent two days getting halfway.

SeaSoul is on Google Play as Seasoul Ai and is free with a soft cap. The community describes it, approvingly, as close to a clone: same format, similar characters, comparable memory. The obvious risk is the one users raise themselves, that as it grows and server bills arrive it follows Chai down the same road.

Emochi draws the most mixed reports. Some users describe unlimited free messaging with longer and better replies than Chai, others say the free tier is gated behind gems, and one reported that ads served inside the app nearly got their phone compromised.

So why are none of them ranked above? Because I cannot verify them to the standard the five above meet.

Pricing is undocumented or disputed, moderation policies are mostly unpublished, and in places there is no traceable company behind the app. Recommending an unverifiable chat app to someone about to type intimate messages into it is not a trade worth making.

I think the users making this case are broadly right, and it is the strongest argument for paying Chai’s new price rather than leaving. It is also why the honest framing of this page is a trade rather than an upgrade. You are swapping a model built for this specific job, now rationed by pieces unless you subscribe, for platforms that cost less or let you chat for free, most of them running somebody else’s model underneath.

If your roleplay stays in romantic or moderately explicit territory, that trade is easy and the five above will serve you well.
