The Verdict: Pick Kindroid if you want one companion that remembers you, calls you and checks in for months. Pick Candy AI if you want pictures, video and a ready-made character tonight. Neither is free anymore: Candy stops free accounts at 5 messages, and since October 1, 2026 Kindroid gives new accounts a one-time 50-message preview before the chat locks.
Candy AI vs Kindroid used to be an easy call for anyone on a budget, because Kindroid let you chat for free without a limit.
That ended on October 1, 2026, when Kindroid retired its free Lite model and unlimited free messaging. Now both apps put a paywall in front of you within your first evening.
What bothers me about most comparisons of these two apps is that they still describe a Kindroid free tier that no longer exists. The real question now is what each subscription pays for, and the two answers are very different.
Candy charges little for chat and meters pictures, video and voice through tokens. Kindroid flips that: one flat price covers chat, memory and a monthly call allowance, with add-ons for people who want more.
Below are the current prices on both, how each one remembers you, and which one fits the way you plan to use it.

Candy AI vs Kindroid, Which Is Better for You?
Kindroid is better for a long-running companion that remembers you, and Candy AI is better for visual fantasy with ready-made characters you can start chatting with in seconds.
If pictures and quick scenes are what you came for, Candy AI is built for exactly that. It turns an image of your character into a short video in two steps, and its Build Your Video tool lets you pick the character, action and location from presets.
Kindroid works the other way round. You write the character yourself, with a backstory, key memories and example messages, and the app spends its effort remembering what you tell it.
Kindroid is the one I hand to anyone who wants the same companion in three months, because that is the problem it was built to solve.
| If you want… | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Pictures and short videos of your character | Candy AI | Image-to-video and preset video scenes, paid with tokens |
| A companion that remembers last month | Kindroid | Five memory systems, including medium-term Cascaded Memory |
| Voice and video calls | Kindroid | Calls are part of the paid plan, with a monthly credit allowance |
| To start chatting in under a minute | Candy AI | Ready-made characters, no setup |
| A real phone app | Kindroid | iOS and Android apps, while Candy runs in your browser |
| The lowest monthly price | Candy AI | $3.99 a month on the yearly plan |
Can You Still Use Candy AI or Kindroid for Free?
Only briefly on either app: Candy AI gives free accounts 5 messages in total, and Kindroid gives new accounts a one-time preview of 50 messages before the account turns read-only.
Kindroid made that change on October 1, 2026, when it retired its free Lite model.

Kindroid’s update log is blunt about it: “The previous Lite model and unlimited free messaging have been retired.” Existing free users got a final batch of 50 messages on October 1, and accounts that had gone quiet went straight to read-only.
New accounts now get 50 messages on Kindroid’s flagship model with paid-level memory, or 15 in some regions, plus 5 selfies, 5,000 audio credits and room for 2 Kindroids, per its subscriptions page. Regenerating a reply or asking it to continue counts as half a message.
Read-only is softer than it sounds. Your Kindroids and chats stay, and you can still export or delete them. What stops is sending messages and making calls, until you pay or start the trial.
Candy’s free plan is smaller still. Its help center lists three things a free account can do: send up to 5 messages across all characters, create one custom character and generate one image.
My yardstick for a free tier is whether it lets you find out if you like the app before your card comes out. Kindroid’s 50 messages pass that test, and Candy’s 5 do not.
Kindroid also offers a 3-day trial, but it needs a card on file and turns into a paid plan unless you cancel, and on the web it asks for a verified phone number too. The trial does not include Kindroid’s newest model, which unlocks only after you pay. Candy has no trial, though its first month costs $9.99 instead of $13.99.
The squeeze fits the wider market. Appfigures data in TechCrunch put companion apps’ revenue per download at $1.18 in the first half of 2025, more than double the $0.52 of 2024.
How Much Do Candy AI and Kindroid Cost per Month?
Candy AI costs $13.99 a month after a $9.99 first month, or $3.99 a month on the yearly plan, while Kindroid costs $15.99 a month through the App Store and usually less on the web.

| What you get | Candy AI | Kindroid |
|---|---|---|
| Free access | 5 messages in total, 1 custom character, 1 image | One-time 50 messages (15 in some regions) and 5 selfies, then read-only |
| Trial | None | 3 days, card required, renews unless cancelled |
| 1 month | $9.99 first month, then $13.99 | $15.99 in the App Store |
| 3 months | $26.97 ($8.99 a month) | $42.99 in the App Store |
| 12 months | $47.88 ($3.99 a month) | $159.99 in the App Store |
| Included each month | Unlimited text chat and 100 tokens for images, video and voice | Unlimited chat, full memory, voice and video calls, 1 million audio credits |
| Paid extras | Token packs, priced only after you sign in | 500,000 audio credits for $14.99, 50 selfie credits for $6.99 |
| Higher tier | Premium Plus with 330 tokens, 20 memory slots and personas, priced after sign-in | Ultra adds $28.99 and MAX adds $68.99 a month on top of the base plan |
Prices checked on Candy AI’s subscriptions page and on Kindroid’s App Store listing, October 29, 2026. Kindroid’s help center listed web prices of $13.99 a month, $37.99 a quarter and $139.99 a year in July 2026, and its current page shows the price only at checkout.
The token model is the part I trust least, because Candy does not publish what an image or a video costs. Its help center lists what tokens pay for, from images and video to voice calls and private content packs, but gives no per-image or per-video price.
Candy values 200 tokens at $20 in its referral offer, so the 100 tokens in your plan are worth about $10 a month.
Kindroid meters the other end. Chat and memory are unlimited on the paid plan, and every minute on a voice or video call costs 400 audio credits, per its voice and calls guide.
The monthly allowance comes to 1 million credits on the standard plan, since a trial grants 150,000 up front and the other 850,000 when it converts.
Live video adds about 2,500 credits a minute at standard quality, per Kindroid’s update log. At that rate a month’s credits cover under six hours of video calling, before the voice itself is counted.
Example scenario: Say you text every evening and want a few pictures a week. On Candy, $13.99 covers every message, and each picture comes out of 100 tokens with no published price per image, so you find the limit when the balance hits zero. On Kindroid, $15.99 in the app covers the texting, a daily selfie allowance and a monthly call allowance, so you pay extra only if you call for hours or want more selfies.
Does Kindroid or Candy AI Remember You Better?
Kindroid remembers far more than Candy AI, because memory is the product it sells.
It stacks five memory systems, while Candy’s own help center says detailed conversation memory is generally tied to the active chat.
Kindroid’s memory guide describes backstory and key memories that stay pinned, plus a Cascaded Memory that reaches back hundreds or thousands of messages at lower detail.
On top of that sit long-term recall, journal entries and Learned Context, which tracks your relationship, key facts and ongoing threads. A chat break keeps those cascaded memories unless you choose to wipe them.
Candy works chat by chat. Its help center says there is no way to clear a chat’s history while keeping its memory.
Premium Plus adds 20 memory slots on top. Candy has also removed proactive messages, so its characters cannot start a conversation.
Example scenario: Mention on Monday that your sister’s wedding is on Saturday. Kindroid is built to carry that into later chats, and since its October updates it can check in when the day comes. On Candy the detail lives in that one chat thread, so a reset wipes it, and the character won’t message you first to ask how the wedding went.
Kindroid’s memory is not effortless. A thread in r/KindroidAI sums up the complaint as “maintaining a database so my AI can pretend to know me,” and the backstory and journal upkeep is real work.
I don’t buy the idea that more memory settings automatically mean better memory. Kindroid’s October 28 update says its companions, which it calls Kins, now keep more of what matters across long-term memory, Cascaded Memory and Learned Context.
That is the change worth watching over the next few months.
Is Candy AI or Kindroid Better for Pictures and Video?
Candy AI is better for pictures and video, because its whole product is built around generating them.
You can turn an image of your character into a short clip, which costs tokens, or build a scene from presets with Build Your Video. Live Action scenes on select characters are token-gated too.
For pictures I would pick Candy without much thought, because images are what the whole app is designed around. Our Candy AI review covers its image tools in more depth.
Kindroid makes selfies and short video selfies of your Kin, and it can send pictures on its own once you turn on its “Act on its own” setting. Its selfies come from a daily allowance and credit packs, with 50 extra credits costing $6.99 on the App Store.
Which Has Better Voice Calls, Candy AI or Kindroid?
Kindroid has the better calls, because voice and video calling are core paid features with a monthly allowance, while Candy lists voice calls as a beta that runs on tokens.
You can design a custom voice for your Kin and call it with live video.
Since Kindroid’s October 17 update, a call you ask for arrives at the time you asked, even mid-conversation.
Candy’s voice messages and beta voice calls each spend tokens from the same 100-token budget as your pictures.
Is Candy AI or Kindroid Safer for Your Privacy?
Kindroid is the safer pick on paper, because its privacy policy rules out selling your data and says nothing about training models on your chats, while Candy’s names model training as a purpose.
Neither app is end-to-end encrypted.
Kindroid’s privacy policy says your chats are encrypted at rest and in transit, and that support staff cannot browse them. Content is decrypted for human review only when its safety system flags it, when you appeal, or when the law requires it.
The same policy says Kindroid will not sell or share your personal data, and a deleted Kindroid or account goes 24 hours after you ask. Kindroid is run by Beautifully Incorporated in Los Angeles, and the service is for adults 18 and over.
Candy’s privacy policy says your messages may go to “third-party LLM providers and/or hosters,” and that interactions can be used to train its models, with human review of de-identified chats. It generally keeps account data for three years after your last activity unless you ask for erasure.
You may read that Candy encrypts stored chats with AES-256. Its privacy policy does not say that, and its homepage mentions only TLS 1.2 or newer encryption for data in transit. Charges show up as EverAI, the company behind Candy, which is registered in Malta.
My take is that Kindroid’s policy is the easier one to live with, mostly because of the training clause. Our Candy AI safety guide walks through Candy’s age checks and billing in detail.
What Content Do Candy AI and Kindroid Allow?
Both allow adult roleplay for users 18 and over.
Kindroid’s moderation guidelines promise no filter on the AI itself and scan only your own messages for three red lines: imminent self-harm, imminent harm to others, and child sexual abuse material.
Candy is built for adult chat and images, and its age checks depend on where you live.
Our guide to Kindroid’s NSFW rules covers what changed for shared Kins in October.
Who Should Choose Candy AI?
Choose Candy AI if you want visual fantasy with little setup and you do not mind paying for pictures with tokens.
It fits these readers best:
- You want images and short videos of your character more than long conversations.
- You like starting from a ready-made character instead of writing one.
- You can live with a monthly token budget, or you plan to buy more tokens.
- You want the lowest yearly price, $47.88, and you will not miss calls or check-ins.
I’d point you to Candy AI if the first item describes you, since that is the one job it does better than Kindroid. Its first month costs $9.99, which is a cheap way to see the image tools for yourself.
Who Should Choose Kindroid?
Choose Kindroid if you want a companion that keeps track of your life over months, and you are willing to write its backstory yourself.
It fits these readers best:
- You want the same companion next month, with its memory intact.
- You want voice and video calls without counting tokens.
- You want an app on your phone, not a browser shortcut.
- You care about how your chats are stored and used.
I keep coming back to Kindroid for one reason: it acts on what you told it, days later. The catch is setup time and price, at $15.99 a month in the app with no unlimited free chat to fall back on.
Which Wins Overall, Candy AI or Kindroid?
Kindroid wins more categories that matter after the first week, while Candy AI takes the first hour, when you want a character and a picture fast.
If your reason for searching is pictures and spicy scenes, Candy wins outright.
| Criteria | Candy AI | Kindroid | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free access | 5 messages | 50-message preview | Kindroid |
| Lowest monthly price | $3.99 on yearly | $13.33 on yearly in the app | Candy AI |
| Memory | Tied to each chat | Five memory systems | Kindroid |
| Pictures and video | Image-to-video, presets, Live Action | Selfies and video selfies | Candy AI |
| Voice and video calls | Voice calls in beta, paid in tokens | Included, 1 million credits | Kindroid |
| Privacy terms | Model training allowed | No sale, no training clause | Kindroid |
| Setup time | Seconds | Write your own backstory | Candy AI |
If I had to keep paying for only one, I would keep Kindroid and still open Candy when I want pictures.
For roleplay with a character you design and pictures on demand, Nectar AI is the other app worth trying before you commit to either.
What If Neither Candy AI nor Kindroid Fits You?
If neither fits, the next stop depends on which side you lean toward, memory or visuals.
Readers who want Kindroid’s depth without its setup can start with our Kindroid alternatives list.
Anyone who wants Candy’s visuals at a different price can compare our Candy AI alternatives instead. I send most people to the memory side first, because a companion that forgets you gets old faster than one with plain pictures.
