Bottom Line: Character AI, Pi AI and Janitor AI are the three free AI companions still worth your time in October 2026. Character AI and Janitor AI both offer unlimited messaging on their free plans, and Pi has no paid tier at all. Kindroid left this list when it retired its free Lite tier on October 1, 2026, and new users now get 50 interactions before a 3-day trial.
There is a specific kind of frustration that comes from downloading what an ad called “free”, spending an evening building rapport with a character, and waking up to a paywall before you finish the conversation. The AI companion category has gotten worse on this in the last twelve months.
Most apps that show up in a Google search for “best free AI companion” are running a free trial dressed up as a free tier, and the difference matters. A trial gives you 50 messages and a countdown timer.
A real free tier lets you live with the app for weeks, learn how it talks to you, and decide whether it earns a subscription on its own merit.
If you want emotional connection without a credit card, or want to test a few platforms before committing, three apps still pass the “is this really free” test. The rest are dressed-up trials.
“Free” means different things depending on what you want from the conversation, and picking the right one is more about your need than the app’s marketing.
If you would rather pay a little than work around free-tier limits, Candy AI is the paid companion I would try first. Its free tier stops at 5 messages in total, and Premium costs $9.99 for the first month, then $13.99 a month for unlimited text chat.

Why “Free AI Companion” Is Harder to Find Than It Should Be
Most apps that advertise a free AI companion in 2026 really run a tightly capped trial that runs out of messages or memory within the first week. The platforms that still ship a real free tier found another way to pay for the model behind it.
Running a serious AI companion costs the platform real money on every message.
Kindroid said as much when it ended its free tier: “Kindroid is expensive to provide, and an indefinite lower-quality free tier is neither sustainable nor representative of the product we’re building.” That line is from its August 18, 2026 update log entry, and the old Lite tier switched off on October 1.
Most apps chose to cap something. Character AI, the biggest name in the category, kept unlimited messaging on its free plan and meters other things instead, including slow mode when servers are busy, daily limits on features like swipes, and ads.
Other platforms ration much harder. Joyland runs free accounts on a daily credit allowance that hands-on reviews put at roughly 50 messages.
SpicyChat is the generous outlier, with a 2,000 daily message limit shown in an in-app notice a free user posted. Its plan table still gives free accounts only 4,096 tokens of memory.
A third group went the opposite direction. Pi, from Inflection AI, has no paid tier, and Inflection’s August 2024 post said it was “committed to keeping consumer Pi available and free for anyone to experience”. The same post warned that it would “implement a cap on message volume for free users”, so very long daily sessions may eventually meet a limit.
A free tier only lasts as long as a company is willing to pay for it, so I now look for a written commitment as well as a feature list. Janitor AI’s help center has one: “We will always keep a free option available for everyone.”
What I Looked for in a Free AI Companion
Five criteria matter most for a free AI companion: the message volume the free tier can sustain, memory across sessions, character library breadth, and how much it feels like a trial. The fifth is whether the company has promised to keep the free tier at all.
Most reviews of free AI companions rank by feature count, which is the wrong axis when “free” is the constraint. A free tier with five features that all work without a paywall beats a free tier with twenty features locked behind a daily message cap. Here is the framework I would walk through for any free pick:
- Daily message budget. Does the free tier give you enough messages to have a real conversation that day, or does it cut you off after 30 to 50 turns?
- Memory across sessions. Will the AI remember what you talked about yesterday, or does it reset every login?
- Character library. Are there enough character options that you can find one whose voice fits, or are you limited to a handful of starter personas?
- Free-vs-paid feature gap. How obvious is the upsell pressure, and how usable is the free experience without paying anything?
- Staying power. Has the company said in writing that the free plan stays, or could it turn into a trial the way Kindroid’s did on October 1, 2026?
The right free pick varies by which of those five matters most to you. Someone who chats 200 times a day needs unlimited messages above all.
Someone who wants a character to feel like a real persistent friend needs memory above all. Someone who is exploring different vibes needs library breadth above all.
The Best Free AI Companion Apps to Try in 2026
Three apps pass the “genuinely free” test in October 2026: Character AI for library breadth, Pi AI for one long conversation with no paid tier, and Janitor AI for long roleplay. Kindroid dropped off the list when its free Lite tier retired on October 1.

| App | Free message cap | Memory across sessions | Character library | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Character AI | Unlimited, with slow mode when busy | 15 memory pins on free | Millions of user-made characters | Library breadth, exploring vibes |
| Pi AI | No paid tier; Inflection announced a free-user cap in 2024 | Improved in the July 2026 update | None (Pi only) | One long conversation |
| Janitor AI | Unlimited chats | About 9k tokens of context | Millions of community bots | Long roleplay on a free model |
| Nomi (free tier) | Daily allowance, resets next day | Built around long-term memory | Custom-built only | Trying memory-first design |
| Joyland (free tier) | About 50 credits a day, per hands-on reviews | Short context window | Large character library | Brief sampling only |
| Kindroid (since October 1, 2026) | 50 interactions, then a 3-day trial, then read-only | Paid-quality memory during the preview | Two Kin slots for new users | A short preview, no longer a free home |
Here is how I would pick between the top three:
Character AI is the right pick if you want library breadth
Character AI’s free tier is the strongest entry point if you do not yet know what you want from an AI companion. Its library of millions of user-made characters lets you sample a sci-fi mentor, a historical figure, a fictional best friend, and a tutor inside one app, all without spending a dollar.
Character AI’s plan page says “Unlimited messaging stays on every plan, including free,” and its voice FAQ says Character Voice is “available to all users, free of charge.” Free accounts get 15 memory pins, and the trade-offs are ads, slow mode when servers are busy and daily limits on features like swipes.
The (c.ai) lite plan starts at $4.99 a month, doubles the pins to 30 and cuts the ads, while c.ai+ removes ads entirely. Our guide to Character AI’s daily limits explains which limits apply on the free plan and when they reset.
Pi AI is the right pick if you want one long conversation
Pi AI is the honest answer to the “is anything genuinely free” question, because there is no paid tier to upsell you into. Inflection’s July 21, 2026 update improved its voice, conversation and memory, and added reminders, to-do lists and shopping tools.
The trade-off is that Pi is a single conversational AI persona rather than a companion platform. There is no character library and no roleplay scenario builder.
If your need is “I want to talk to someone for hours every day without ever hitting a paywall”, Pi is the answer. If your need is “I want a specific character who feels like a real persistent friend”, Pi is too sparse.
Janitor AI is the right pick for long roleplay on a free model
Janitor AI’s subscription FAQ lists the free tier as “Unlimited chats with millions of bots” on its standard chat models, with a “Context limit of around 9k tokens”. That is more than double the 4,096 tokens SpicyChat gives free accounts, so long stories hold together for longer.
The trade-off is that Janitor is built for character roleplay, so it suits a storyteller more than someone who wants one gentle daily check-in. Janitor+ adds “5x more context for better memory” and priority replies, and our Janitor+ breakdown covers whether that upgrade is worth paying for.
Kindroid is no longer a free pick
Kindroid’s free Lite tier, which this page used to recommend, retired on October 1, 2026. New accounts now get 50 interactions with paid-tier model and memory quality, or 15 in regions with heavy account abuse. After that comes a 3-day trial, then read-only access unless you subscribe.
Nothing is deleted when the interactions run out, since Kindroid says Kins and conversations “remain available to access and read without a subscription.” The preview is still a fair way to test the paid product before the trial starts.
Existing Lite users got a final 50 interactions on October 1, but only accounts active shortly before that date. Dormant Lite accounts went straight to read-only. If Lite was your everyday companion, our Kindroid alternatives guide compares the closest replacements.
Which Free AI Companion Should You Pick
The right pick depends on a single question: do you want to explore many different characters, have one long conversation with a single AI, or run long roleplay stories? Each answer points to a different free platform.
If you want library breadth and you do not mind ads and slow mode, choose Character AI. Messaging is unlimited on the free plan, and the entry friction is zero.
If you want one long conversation and you do not need custom characters, choose Pi AI. It is the only option on this list with no paid tier at all.
If you want long roleplay with more memory on a free plan, choose Janitor AI. Chats are unlimited, the free context runs to about 9k tokens, and the company has promised to keep a free option.
A note on the paid path. Once you outgrow a free tier, Candy AI Premium covers unlimited text messages plus 100 tokens a month for images and voice.
Nectar AI is my second paid pick. It gives free users 15 messages a day, then charges $9.99 a month for 6,000 messages or $34.99 for unlimited messaging with 64K of memory.
| Need | Best free pick | Upgrade path if you outgrow it |
|---|---|---|
| Explore many characters | Character AI | (c.ai) lite, c.ai+ or Candy AI |
| One long conversation | Pi AI | Candy AI or Nectar AI |
| Long roleplay with memory | Janitor AI | Janitor+ or Nectar AI |
| Strong memory | Nomi free | Nomi paid or Nectar AI |
| Specific aesthetic vibe | Joyland free | Candy AI or Crushon |

What to Expect in the First Week of a Free AI Companion
The first week with any free AI companion is mostly about learning whether the free tier supports the conversation you want. The most useful thing you can do is test the same thing on two different apps before deciding.
Pick two of the three free options and run a parallel test for seven days, having the same kind of conversation on both. Character AI and Pi AI make a good pair, since they answer different needs.
Watch for which one runs out of patience first, which one remembers what you talked about yesterday, and which one feels like it has more to give you in week two than week one.
Usually one of the two proves the right fit by day three or four. You open one app more than the other, one app remembers a detail you mentioned, or you hit a limit on one and not the other.
Kindroid’s 50 free interactions also make a good one-evening side test if you are curious what a paid-quality companion feels like.
Pew Research’s June 2026 survey of 5,119 US adults found that about half now use AI chatbots, but only 4% use them for companionship. The category is still small, free tiers are getting harder to find, and the three picks above are the ones that still pass the “is this genuinely free” test.
