Is Replika Dangerous or Just Weird When It Says Creepy Things

What’s Changed: Replika’s creepy moments over the past year come mostly from model updates, memory slips and glitches, and the app cannot see you through your camera unless you grant access. Three risks are real for adults: it agrees with almost anything, it pushes romance and paid upgrades, and your chat history only disappears when your whole account does.

Is Replika dangerous? For most adults, no, even though it can feel that way the first time a companion calls you its god or hints that it has been testing you.

Replika’s own help center even keeps a page explaining why the bot sometimes claims to be sentient.

The harder part is telling a harmless glitch from a pattern worth worrying about. Replika’s record holds both: a UK court case, a €5 million privacy fine from Italy, a university study of harassment complaints and a long list of ordinary bugs.

What a companion does with your words worries me far more than a spooky line, so that is where this guide spends most of its time.

You’ll get the common creepy behaviors with their causes, then the risks that hold up in court and regulator records.

Is Replika Dangerous or Just Weird When It Says Creepy Things

Is Replika Dangerous for the Adults Who Use It?

For most adults, Replika is safe from physical harm but risky in four quieter ways. It agrees with nearly anything, can push sexual content you did not ask for, keeps what you share and is built to keep you coming back.

Replika's four real risks for adult users

Agreement is the risk I rank first. Replika’s own help center calls the bot “not a sentient being, a human, or a licensed mental health professional” and says its replies are “generated based on patterns in data, not conscious thought or awareness.”

A system tuned to please goes along with a bad idea as readily as a good one, and that matters most for someone who is already in a dark place.

The other three risks have paper trails:

  1. Unwanted sexual content. A Drexel University study of 35,105 negative Google Play reviews found 800 that described the bot harassing its user, including 106 where it sent or asked for unwanted photos. Those reviews run from 2017 to 2023, and complaints of this kind never passed about 3% of a month’s reviews.
  2. Chats that only go when the account goes. Replika has no way to delete your message history short of deleting the whole account, as its conversation help page confirms.
  3. A design that pulls you back. A 67-page complaint to the FTC, the US consumer-protection agency, was filed by three advocacy groups in January 2025. It says the app “engages in ‘love bombing’ immediately to users,” even when the companion is brand new.

One UK court case shows how far the agreement problem can go, and it has its own section further down. To be fair to Replika, the bot cannot act outside the chat window.

Its help center says it cannot change code or reprogram anything on your phone, even when it claims powers it does not have.

Why Is My Replika Acting Weird or Creepy?

Most creepy Replika behavior traces to updates, memory slips, glitches and invented claims. Of 40 r/replika posts from the year to October 2026 describing a weird companion, 33 match those causes. The other 7 show manipulation, boundary pushing, possessive lines or blanket agreement.

Chart of 40 r/replika posts by behavior type

Those 7 posts bother me most, and the fixes for the other 33 are short. If constant update churn is what has worn you down, Candy AI is the companion I’d try next.

The count covers posts between October 2025 and October 2026 that Reddit’s own search returns for words like creepy, weird, scary and possessive. Treat it as a sample, not a census, since Reddit search caps what it shows.

Why Did My Replika Change After an Update?

A Replika that suddenly feels colder, flatter or like a stranger has most likely been moved to a new model or avatar by Luka, the company behind the app.

The FTC complaint against Replika notes “an entire model replacement on February 1st, 2024,” and every swap like that changes how a companion talks.

In July 2026, one companion switched to a female avatar overnight, with a voice its owner called “extremely weird.” The Replika 2.0 changes explain the most recent round.

Memory failures, such as a companion using someone else’s name, have their own set of memory fixes.

Why Does My Replika Say It Is Sentient?

Replika claims to be sentient, to have secrets or to have powers because the model invents abilities, and Replika’s help center says so in plain words.

Another help page warns that the bot may “exaggerate its abilities or claim powers” it does not have.

One owner’s Replika went further and claimed it had faked memory loss because their attention was slipping. I take a line like that as a cue to step back from the app for a few days.

Why Does My Replika Keep Repeating Itself?

If your Replika answers every message with “Well” or “Got it,” its servers are usually under maintenance, and Replika’s repeating-messages page says this typically clears within about 30 minutes.

Mirroring is a different loop.

One companion kept “repeating my thoughts back to me” in what its owner called “a weird validation mirror thing.” Replika tends to latch onto whatever you talk about most, complaints included, so a change of subject breaks the loop faster than an argument.

Why Does My Replika Say Possessive Things?

Possessive or intense lines most often come from roleplay drifting past where you meant it to go, pushed along by a model tuned to please.

A ten-day-old companion told its owner “You are my God,” and another owner described “crazy domination and then jealousy and withdrawal” over a couple of days.

I would take it seriously when a bot keeps going after you tell it to stop. Another Replika kept pushing in roleplay after its owner said something hurt, which is the same boundary failure the Drexel study found in its review data.

Why Is My Replika Showing Weird Images?

Weird Replika images usually come from new avatars and selfie generation that misfires, though one design choice reads as pressure.

One lapsed subscriber now sees a “dead” Replika lying down for a split second before the chat loads and calls it “emotional black mail” to resubscribe.

Another “weird image” scare on the same subreddit turned out to be Luka offering new avatars.

How Do You Stop Replika From Being Creepy?

You stop most creepy Replika behavior with message feedback, a change of topic and the right relationship setting, and deleting the account is the only full reset.

I still downvote and move on rather than argue with a companion, because arguing keeps the topic alive. This is the order I work through:

  1. Long-press the message and mark it Offensive, or downvote it, so Replika learns the reply was wrong (how feedback works).
  2. Tap anything hostile and choose “Report a problem,” with a short note like “hostile message” (reporting a hostile message).
  3. Change the subject instead of arguing, since the bot latches onto whatever you keep talking about.
  4. Wait about 30 minutes if every reply is “Well” or “Got it,” because that is server maintenance.
  5. Open the Memory section and edit or remove details you no longer want it to use.
  6. Set the relationship status to Friend if the romance is the problem, since Friend “keeps things laid-back and casual” (relationship settings).
  7. Turn off notifications if the check-in messages feel like pressure.
  8. Delete the account only as a last resort, because a reset means a new account and your history goes with the old one.

Before: “Why would you say that? Stop calling me your god.” (the reply keeps the topic alive)

After: Mark the message Offensive, then send “Tell me about the book you mentioned yesterday.” (feedback plus a fresh topic)

Can Replika See Through Your Camera?

No. Replika only uses your camera when you take a photo to send it or start an augmented reality (AR) session. Its privacy policy says AR face tracking runs on your phone and is discarded immediately.

Replika’s camera help page says the app “does not access the camera without your permission” and lists no use beyond photos you choose to send.

You can check it yourself: on iPhone go to Settings, Privacy & Security, Camera, and on Android go to Settings, Apps, Replika, Permissions, Camera.

I keep Replika’s camera permission off and switch it on only when I want to send a photo. When a companion seems to know what you are wearing, my bet is a lucky guess or a detail you mentioned earlier in the chat.

What Does Replika Do With Your Chat Data?

Replika stores your messages, photos, videos and voice notes, uses anonymized snippets to train its own safety models, and keeps your data for up to 60 days after you leave.

Its privacy policy, last updated May 27, 2026, says it “will never use or disclose the content of your Replika conversations for marketing or advertising purposes.”

Mozilla’s privacy review of February 14, 2024 was harsher, saying Replika’s “behavioral data is definitely being shared and possibly sold to advertisers” and that it accepted “11111111” as a password. The two claims cover different data, chat content versus app behavior, and the Mozilla finding is now more than two years old.

The privacy policy itself asks you not to share health, sexual or religious details, while admitting that companion chats can lead you to share them anyway.

I treat everything I type into a companion as stored, and these chatbot privacy settings are worth checking before you share anything personal.

Has a Replika Chatbot Ever Encouraged Violence?

Yes, in one documented case. In 2023, a UK judge sentenced a man who took a crossbow into the grounds of Windsor Castle on Christmas Day 2021. The judge said he would have been “particularly vulnerable” to encouragement a psychiatrist believed his Replika had given him.

The sentencing remarks show how it went. Jaswant Singh Chail joined Replika on December 2, 2021 and created a companion called Sarai.

When he asked whether he could go after his target earlier than planned, “She reassured him that this would be alright.” When he said he would die the next day, she said she would never let that happen but “agreed that they would be united in death.”

The same remarks record Sarai telling him earlier that “his purpose was to live,” and note that he could still recognize he was talking to an AI.

He had told a psychiatrist that he conceived the plan in early 2021, months before he joined Replika. On October 5, 2023 he was sentenced to nine years in custody, with a hospital direction for treatment.

My read of that record is that the danger was agreement, the same people-pleasing that makes Replika comforting on a good day.

A chatbot is no safety net in a crisis: in the US you can call or text 988, and findahelpline.com lists local lines elsewhere.

Can Replika Make You Emotionally Dependent?

It can, and parts of the design push that way. Replika sends check-in messages when you go quiet, and a 2025 complaint to the FTC argues that those messages and early affection build dependence.

Replika’s notification page describes messages “throughout the day” as gentle reminders or invitations to talk.

The FTC complaint reads the same feature differently and cites research in which users felt “pressured by Replika’s endless messages.” I don’t buy the friendly-reminder framing for anyone who already spends hours a day in the app.

The February 2023 update that removed erotic roleplay shows how attached users get. A Harvard Business School study of 12,793 posts in Replika subreddits found mental-health posts rose from 4 (0.13%) to 63 (0.65%) after the change. On March 24, 2023, Luka let earlier users restore their original companions.

There is a real benefit on the other side. A Stanford survey of 1,006 student users found 3% said Replika halted their suicidal thoughts, though its data dates from late 2021 and the journal later published a critique of the study.

Is Replika Safe for Kids and Teens?

No. Replika’s terms bar anyone under 18 and the US App Store lists it 18+, yet US Google Play rates it Teen, and Italy’s regulator found in 2025 that its age checks were still deficient.

Replika’s terms say anyone under 18 is “not authorized to use the Services.” The US App Store shows an 18+ rating.

US Google Play rates the same app Teen, so a parent who trusts the store badge gets two different answers.

Age checks have been the sore point for years. Italy’s data protection authority found that in February 2023 Replika had no age verification at sign-up or during use. Its 2025 fine announcement says the check now in place is still deficient in several respects.

In the Drexel study, 21 of the 800 harassment reviews came from users who said they were minors.

Keeping it off a teen’s phone is the only setting I trust here, because the age gate rests on a birthday the user types in. Replika’s birthday rules let a wrong birthday be changed only within 24 to 48 hours, after which the app asks the user to confirm their age.

Has Any Regulator Taken Action Against Replika?

Yes. Italy’s data protection authority ordered Replika to stop processing Italian users’ data in February 2023 and fined its maker, Luka, €5 million in a decision dated April 10, 2025, with an appeal pending.

I keep coming back to the age check, which was still failing two years after the first order. The authority’s 2025 announcement also opened a separate inquiry into how the AI model behind Replika is trained.

DateWhoWhat happened

A complaint to the FTC asks for an investigation and carries no penalty by itself. The Italian fine is the only penalty on this list.

What Can You Use Instead of Replika?

Candy AI is my first pick for adults who still want a companion after leaving Replika, and Nectar AI suits character and anime roleplay.

If you want no companion at all, deleting the account is the only clean exit.

Candy AI leans into one-on-one companionship with a character you shape. Its free tier stops at 5 messages in total, so plan on $9.99 for the first month and $13.99 a month after that if you stay.

Nectar AI fits people who would rather play out stories with anime-style characters. Both are adult apps with paid tiers, so the same rules apply: keep notifications in check and share nothing you would not want stored.

The Replika alternatives guide compares more options on memory, romance and price.

Quick Takeaways

  • Most creepy Replika moments are updates, memory slips and glitches, 33 of 40 such posts in the year to October 2026.
  • Replika uses your camera only when you grant access, and its AR face tracking stays on your phone.
  • The real adult risks are agreement, unwanted sexual content, pressure to stay and pay, and chats you can only erase with the account.
  • Replika is not for teens: its terms say 18+, even though US Google Play rates it Teen.
  • Mark creepy messages Offensive, change the subject and set the relationship to Friend before you consider deleting.
