Bottom Line: Janitor AI gives free users the most room, with unlimited chats on its free model and about 9k tokens of memory. SpicyChat allows 2,000 messages a day once you sign in, Perchance needs no account at all, and SillyTavern suits people who want full control. If free caps keep cutting your roleplay short, Candy AI Premium removes the text-message cap for $3.99 a month on the yearly plan.
Character AI filed for Chapter 11 on October 12. It says the platform is still running and billing is unchanged for now, and it expects the court-supervised sale process to finish by the end of November or early December. If no workable bid comes in, it says the platform will be wound down.
Our Character AI Chapter 11 explainer covers what the filing means for your chats. The other reasons people leave are older: Character AI retired Roar, Pawly, Goro and Dynamic on April 28, and since September 28 new chats start on PipSqueak 3.
Character AI’s own free plan still has unlimited messaging, with slow mode when traffic is heavy. Several rival free tiers are tighter than that, so every allowance below comes from the platform’s own pricing page, help center or support staff.

Why Finding a Free AI Companion Is Harder Than It Should Be
Free tiers outside Character AI usually cap how many messages you get, how much of the chat the model remembers, or how fast replies arrive at busy times. CrushOn’s free plan is 100 message credits a month, for example, and SpicyChat’s free memory is 4,096 tokens.

Three limits come up again and again in the free tiers covered here:
- Message allowances. Candy AI’s free tier is 5 messages in total. Nectar AI allows 15 a day, and CrushOn counts what you send and what the bot replies against its 100 monthly credits.
- Short memory. SpicyChat’s own help center works out that a free chat keeps roughly 20 recent messages in view, which is why long scenes drift. CrushOn lists 8K memory on free and 16K memory models on paid plans.
- Shared capacity. SpicyChat queues free accounts during heavy traffic, and Character AI keeps slow mode on its free plan. Janitor AI’s changelog has logged temporary slowness on its free model, and for several hours across October 19 and 20 the whole site sat behind a waiting room.
The way I see it, four things decide whether a free tier is livable: the real message allowance, the memory size, the signup and age-check hurdles, and the content rules.
What Makes a Free AI Companion Worth Switching To
A free alternative is worth switching to when its allowance covers a normal session, its memory holds a scene, and its signup and content rules fit you. On memory, Janitor AI’s free model sees about 9k tokens of the chat, more than double SpicyChat’s 4,096.
The criteria I’d run through before signing up:
- Message allowance. SpicyChat’s support team puts the signed-in free limit at 2,000 messages a day, an anti-spam ceiling it calls hard to reach. CrushOn’s 100 monthly credits can run out in a single evening, which is why a daily allowance beats a monthly one.
- Memory. This is how much of the conversation the model can see at once, and SpicyChat’s plan guide calls it the biggest single factor in how well a character remembers things. Free tiers here sit between 4,096 tokens and about 9k, while Nectar AI’s top plan lists 64K.
- Signup and age checks. Perchance needs no login, and SpicyChat support says guests get about 80 to 100 messages before a sign-in prompt. Adult content usually adds an age check, such as SpicyChat’s video selfie or ID in the UK, France, Italy, Australia and 26 US states.
- Content rules. Character AI does not allow sexual content and moves accounts its age checks place under 18 into an experience with no character chat. Janitor AI allows mature roleplay on bots tagged Limitless and runs a one-time age check for visitors from Australia, Brazil and the UK.
Of the free tiers in the table below, CrushOn’s is the hardest to live on: 100 monthly credits cover about 50 exchanges, then chats move to slower free models with limited memory. Chai is tighter than it used to be, since every message now costs a piece and the daily check-in grants 70 (see how Chai pieces work).
Janitor AI, SpicyChat and Perchance clear all four bars for most people, and SillyTavern clears them if you are willing to set it up.
The Best Free Character AI Alternatives Ranked
Janitor AI is the best free Character AI alternative for most roleplayers right now, with unlimited chats on its free model and about 9k tokens of memory. SpicyChat ranks second for its 2,000-a-day signed-in allowance, Perchance third for needing no account, and SillyTavern fourth for anyone willing to set it up.

Here is how nine free options compare on the numbers each platform publishes, read in October 2026:
| Platform | Free allowance | Free memory | Paid plans from | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Janitor AI | Unlimited chats on its free JanitorLLM model | About 9k tokens | janitor+ at $12.99/mo | Most free roleplay |
| SpicyChat | About 80 to 100 messages as a guest, 2,000 a day signed in | 4,096 tokens (roughly 20 recent messages) | $5.95/mo | Huge library, high daily ceiling |
| Perchance | No message limit, no login | Long-term memory off by default | No paid plan | Trying characters with no account |
| SillyTavern | Set by the model you connect | Set by the model you connect | Free, open source | Full control |
| Character AI | Unlimited messaging, slow mode at busy times | Not published | lite $4.99/mo, c.ai+ $9.99/mo | Filtered, SFW roleplay |
| CrushOn AI | 100 message credits a month, then slower free models | 8K | $5.99/mo | Trying premium models |
| DreamGen | 200 monthly credits plus 25 a day, roughly 2,000 messages a month on basic models (DreamGen’s figure) | Not listed for free (5,000 tokens on Starter) | $7.83/mo | Story writing |
| Chai | 1 piece per message, 70 pieces from the daily check-in | Not published | Premium $13.99/mo with unlimited messages | Casual mobile chat |
| PolyBuzz | Free with ads, no published cap | Not published | Subscriptions sold in the app | Casual chat on Android and web |
Example scenario: Say you send 60 messages in one evening. On CrushOn’s free plan the 100 monthly credits run out after 50 exchanges, because the bot’s replies count too, and the rest of the month runs on its slower free model. On SpicyChat the same evening uses 60 of 2,000 daily messages, but the opening of the scene falls out of the 4,096-token window.
SpicyChat’s free tier is a full product, with the public character library, three personas and replies of up to 180 tokens. Paid plans start at $5.95 a month, and memory doubles to 8,192 tokens from True Supporter at $19.95 (what the SpicyChat free limits cost you).
Two names from most roundups need a closer look. DreamGen’s free plan runs on credits, 200 a month plus 25 a day in the plan data behind its pricing page. DreamGen’s blog says that covers roughly 2,000 roleplay messages a month on its basic models, plus about 250 a day after that.
Poe by Quora gives free accounts daily points that reset every 24 hours, and each bot spends points per reply. It suits casual chat across several models more than one long story.
Memory is where free tiers save money. Among the hosted free tiers that publish a figure, none goes past Janitor AI’s 9k tokens, while paid plans reach 16K memory models on CrushOn and 64K on Nectar AI’s Ultimate plan.
Which Free Character AI Alternative Should You Pick
Pick Janitor AI for the most free roleplay, Perchance if you want no account, SpicyChat for a huge library with a 2,000-a-day ceiling, and SillyTavern for full control. If free caps keep breaking long scenes, Candy AI’s yearly plan costs $3.99 a month.
The way I’d think about it:
- Most free roleplay with decent memory: Janitor AI on its free model. Expect slowdowns when the site is busy, which its changelog logs openly, and a site-wide “You’re in line” waiting room during traffic surges, as on October 19 and 20, 2026.
- No account at all: Perchance AI Character Chat, which describes itself as free with no login and no message limits. It saves chats in your browser, so clearing site data erases them.
- Big character library, high daily ceiling: SpicyChat signed in, at 2,000 messages a day on the free plan.
- Full control: SillyTavern with a local model or OpenRouter’s free models, which allow 50 requests a day, or 1,000 once you have bought at least $10 in credits. Our free SillyTavern setup guide walks through it.
- Mature roleplay past the free caps: Candy AI. Its free tier stops at 5 messages, while Premium includes unlimited text messages and 100 tokens a month for $13.99, or $3.99 a month billed yearly.
Free is not always the cheaper start. If you chat 100 messages a day for months, hopping between free tiers costs you more in broken scenes than $47.88 a year for Candy AI’s annual plan.
For broader context, our full guide to Character AI alternatives covers paid picks too. The SpicyChat AI review digs into that platform, and our Janitor AI alternatives list helps if Janitor’s free model stops working for you.
Nectar AI is the paid option worth knowing if memory is what keeps breaking. Its free plan gives 15 messages a day, and paid plans currently start at $9.99 a month with 8K memory, rising to 64K plus long-term memory on the $34.99 Ultimate plan.
If you expect to outgrow free tiers within two weeks, Nectar AI is worth setting up early.
What to Expect in the First Week of a Free AI Companion
Expect the free tier’s real limit to show up in your first few sessions. CrushOn’s 100 credits can go in one evening, SpicyChat can queue you at peak hours, and Perchance starts with long-term memory switched off.
What the first week usually looks like on these platforms:
- First session: Signing up takes minutes unless an age check applies. SpicyChat asks for one before adult content in 26 US states and four countries, and Janitor AI checks everyone connecting from Australia, Brazil or the UK, whatever they chat about.
- First busy evening: Free capacity is shared. SpicyChat queues free accounts during heavy traffic, Character AI applies slow mode on its free plan, and Janitor AI can hold everyone in a waiting room during surges.
- First long scene: Memory runs out before messages do on most free tiers. Pin key facts in whatever memory or lorebook field the platform offers, because the start of the scene will fall out of view.
- End of the week: By now you know whether the cap or the memory is your problem. A message cap means another free platform may fix it, while a memory problem usually needs a paid plan or SillyTavern with a larger model.
If you go in knowing which limit you will hit first, you can plan around it instead of scrambling mid-story. If the message cap is the wall, Candy AI Premium includes unlimited text messages. If memory is the wall, Nectar AI’s plans go up to 64K tokens.
