Character AI Daily Message Limit and When It Resets

Correction, October 2026: An earlier version of this page said free users were capped at 50 to 80 messages a day. Character AI’s own Help Center says messaging is unlimited on every plan, including free. This page now covers what Character AI does meter: swipes, go-ons and slow mode.

If a pop-up just stopped your scene on Character AI, it was probably one of its daily meters. Character AI does not limit how many messages you type, but those meter pop-ups look a lot like a message cap.

This guide covers what is metered, when each meter resets, and what slow mode is doing when replies crawl.

Character AI Daily Message Limit

Is There a Daily Message Limit on Character AI?

No. Character AI does not cap the messages you type on any plan, and its About (c.ai) lite help page, edited September 22, 2026, says “Unlimited messaging stays on every plan, including free.”

The September 28 launch post says the same thing. What free accounts do hit is a daily cap on swipes and go-ons, plus slow mode when the servers are busy.

Those meters arrived with a March 10, 2026 announcement from the Character.AI Team, which introduced “usage limits across a number of features, starting with Swipes, Go-ons … and Memos” and promised to keep “core chat access free for everyone.”

If the cap matters more to you than staying on Character AI, a paid Candy AI plan includes unlimited text chat, so there is no daily message count to hit.

Swipes (regenerated replies)About 400 a day, plus 30 per replyLimitedHighest
Go-ons (continue button)100 a dayLimitedHighest

The plan rows come from Character AI’s own plan tables, which list free and lite feature limits only as “Limited”. For c.ai+, the subscribe page says “Highest” while the Help Center says “Unlimited”. The 400 and 100 figures are what the limit pop-ups printed until late September 2026, such as “Woah! You hit 100 Go-on today.”

Since about September 29 the pop-up shows no number, and users who noticed the change say the caps stayed the same. Our guides to the go-on limit and the swipe limit cover each meter in detail.

A go-on is the arrow that makes a character keep writing without a reply from you. Typing anything, even a single period, sends a normal message instead, so the go-on cap never ends a conversation.

When the Daily Limits Reset

Swipes, go-ons and voice memos all refill at 00:00 UTC, once a day, for every account at the same moment.

The subreddit’s moderators have said so several times. One wrote on August 19, 2026 that the “daily limits for Swipes, Go-ons, and Voice Memos reset every day at 12:00 AM UTC,” adding that it “may take a few extra minutes.”

The reset is a fixed clock time, so a meter you emptied at 11 PM UTC is full again an hour later. Here is when that lands in a few time zones.

Where you areReset time in October 2026After the clocks change
New York8:00 PM7:00 PM from November 1
Los Angeles5:00 PM4:00 PM from November 1
London1:00 AMMidnight from October 25
India5:30 AMNo change
Manila8:00 AMNo change
Sydney11:00 AM10:00 AM from April 2027

The pop-up no longer shows a countdown, so this clock is the only guide. Slow mode works differently, since its pop-up prints its own end time.

Why Replies Slow Down Without a Message Cap

Slow replies on a free account usually mean slow mode, a timed throttle Character AI applies at busy times, and the pop-up tells you when it ends.

How Character AI slow mode works

The pop-up reads along the lines of “Slow mode until 05:29” with an offer to “Upgrade to c.ai+ or use Charms to skip slow mode.” You can keep chatting while it runs, and replies come back more slowly until the time shown.

Sessions ran from an hour to several hours a day in early October 2026, and the Charms FAQ lists “Skip slow-mode” as one of its uses, at about 20 Charms a skip by one user’s count. Our chat limit guide tracks the October sessions in more detail.

Two other screens get mistaken for a message cap. The Waiting Room is a queue for site-wide overload that Character AI says usually lasts “1-2 minutes or less.”

A chat-time countdown that shrinks day by day is a different thing again. It means Character AI treats the account as under 18, and adults flagged by mistake can follow our age verification guide.

How to Keep a Free Chat Going

Because none of the meters caps the messages you type, a few habits keep a free chat moving through every pop-up.

  1. Type a line instead of pressing go-on. A single period or “(continue)” gets a normal reply, and a subreddit moderator confirmed that typing keeps the chat going after the go-on cap.
  2. Ration swipes for the replies that matter. Each one comes out of the roughly 400 a day, so when a reply is only slightly off, steer the scene in your next message.
  3. Plan long sessions around 00:00 UTC. Starting a big scene just after the reset gives you a full day of swipes and go-ons.
  4. Save Charms for slow mode you cannot wait out. At about 20 a skip, they go fast if slow mode keeps returning.

Starting a new chat resets nothing, because the meters are account-wide. Our guide to whether Character AI has a chat limit covers long threads and memory.

Does Paying Change the Daily Limits?

c.ai+ removes slow mode and ads and raises the daily meters to “Highest” for $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year in the US. lite costs $4.99 a month or $2.49 a week and cuts slow mode and ads, but its feature limits stay “Limited.”

Neither plan changes how many messages you can type, since that is already unlimited on free. Pay for c.ai+ if slow mode or swipes are the problem, and see our lite guide before picking the cheaper plan.

If you would rather leave than pay, compare what each app actually meters first.

AppFree planEntry paid planWhat it meters
Character AIUnlimited messageslite, $4.99 a monthSwipes, go-ons and slow mode on free
Candy AI5 messages in totalPremium, $13.99 a monthTokens for images, voice and calls

Candy suits someone ready to pay, with no message meter on Premium, but its free tier is not a substitute for Character AI’s. For more options, including free ones, see our roundup of uncensored websites like Character AI.
